PP: Sigma 16-300mm F3.5-6.7 DC OS | Contemporary Review – A Solid Travel Lens

Sigma 16-300mm F3.5-6.7 DC OS | Contemporary:
B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

Petapixel published its review of the Sigma 16-300mm F3.5-6.7 DC OS | Contemporary, which you can watch in full above or check out the excerpts below:

  • Super zooms are convenient, but we haven’t seen many for mirrorless
  • A lens like this is aimed at torists
  • They tested the lens on a full-frame camera that gives 26MP when cropped to APS-C, so it should be representative of performance on a high-end APS-C camera
  • Compact and takes 67mm filters while weighing 615g
  • Weather sealed
  • It has a tight zoom with a locking switch, so creeping isn’t an issue
  • The manual focus ring is ok
  • 6-stop IBIS in lens
  • Autofocus is quick and accurate with HLA motors
  • Impressive 1:2 macro at 70mm
  • You can work close, but there isn’t much working distance, so the shadow of the lens might get in the way
  • Sharpness is fine at 70mm up close but not amazing
  • Very good at preventing flare
  • No ghosting
  • Not great bokeh because it is busy with some onion rigs
  • There is some digital correction of chromatic aberration and distortion with some vignetting
  • Super zoom lenses are generally going to need some correction so that is fine
  • The center is decently sharp at 16mm f/3.5, but the corners will need some stopping down, but are always a little blurry
  • At 300mm, sharpness is excellent, and the corners are improved with only a bit of softness, but the corners won’t get super sharp, which is ok for most applications
  • 16-300m is a huge range that is largely for travel photographers

Sony a7V Update – Supply Chain Issues Strike Again

We previously reported that the Sony a7V could come in March/April, but now it looks like it could be much later this year. A Russian photography channel reported that Sony told them that they could show the Sony A7V by the end of the year and that it could come in 2026 if they can resolve supply chain issues because Sony would prefer to launch under ideal conditions at CP+ behind closed doors. They also claim that the Sony a7V will come with a completely new sensor.

Caye 200mm f/3.5 Version 1.5

The Caye 200mm f/3.5 was announced only a few months ago, but it wasn’t marketed in the West beyond our coverage. Since then, there has been an announcement of a generation 1.5 lens that seems like it will be a little more expensive and resolve some of the inexpensive lenses shortcomings.

Only 175! Cangye Optics’ new 200mm F3.5 full-frame telephoto prime lens has been upgraded to the 1.5 generation.

The main updates are as follows:
-Solved some known issues and those who raised the issues,
-Improved lens parameters, significantly improved MTF,
-The actual focal length has been increased from 196mm to 216mm,
-Removable lens group for easy dust cleaning,
-Reverse the lens to achieve a soft focus effect.

It still uses a classic set of two optical structures, a fixed F3.5 large aperture, a minimum focusing distance of 3 meters, covering the full frame, a metal nameplate, weighing about 550 grams, optional lens hood and tripod ring, two colors of white and black are available, with Sony E, Canon EF, Canon EF-M, Canon RF, Nikon F, Nikon Z, Fuji X, Leica L and M43 mounts.

If we see this lens in the West, it will likely be sold on Amazon.
