DPRTV: Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 Review

DPRTV posted their Sigma 28-70mm review filmed on the Pentax K-01 so the quality is quite lacking, but it is interesting to see how Jordan gets around the limitations with dubbed audio and more. Below is a summary of their review:

  • Very small and compact
  • 67mm filter thread
  • 474g
  • Worlds smallest 28-70mm f/2.8 full-frame lens
  • Tamron is basically the same dimentions with 28-75mm of range, but a little bit heavier
  • This lens is mostly polycarbonate with a metal lens mount
  • The lens is not weather sealed
  • Well dampened zoom and manual focus ring
  • No OIS
  • Little ghosting in the far corner, but impressive all around
  • Better at the wide-angle than the telephoto range
  • AF is very quick
  • Very little breathing at 70mm with a little more at 28mm
  • Bokeh has a lot of cats eye in the corners and even towards the center of the frame, but it is otherwise nice
  • Bokeh remains round as you stop down, which helps with the cats eyes
  • No major chromatic abbreviation, but there is some LoCA
  • Barrel distortion at 28mm with pincushion distortion at 70mm
  • Sharpness is pretty good in the center at 70mm f/2.8 but gets better by f/5.6
  • Corners aren’t very sharp even stopped down at 70mm
  • At 28mm the corners are better and the center sharpness is good at f/2.8, but gets better at f/5.6
  • This lens is a nice performer stopped down, but wide open it depends
  • The problem is the Tamron is a very good lens that is otherwise excellent outside of some distracting bokeh

Profoto Pro-11 – The ultimate flash
Profoto adds AirX connectivity to their flagship flash. The latest evolution of Profoto’s top of the line flash generator is the addition of AirX connectivity. “This really is a breakthrough,” enthuses Göran Maren, Product Manager at Profoto. “With AirX inside, we’ve ensured the Pro-11 will offer the latest and best user experience for years to come. We are making it future proof”.

The latest evolution of Profoto’s top of the line flash generator is the addition of AirX connectivity. “This really is a breakthrough,” enthuses Göran Maren, Product Manager at Profoto. “With AirX inside, we’ve ensured the Pro-11 will oer the latest and best user experience for years to come. We are making it future proof”.

Profoto had previously introduced AirX for their A10 and B10 lights, at the time focusing on the ability to connect and use the flash with smartphone cameras.

“With AirX you can do this with Pro-11 too,” says Göran. “But for the most part, we are not adding AirX as a feature for today – we are adding it as a cornerstone for connectivity that will grow over time.” Göran continues, “The connectivity between cameras, lights and apps will define how professional images will be created going forward. With AirX inside, we’re ensuring that we can maintain seamless compatibility and connectivity with both current and future devices. Whatever comes down the line, the Pro-11 will compliment it perfectly – ever-broadening your access to the Profoto ecosystem today and tomorrow, so the potential is enormous.”

When shooting with the Pro-11, one instant benefit of having AirX inside becomes clear. The smartphone app control simplifies workflow for photographers and assistants by mirroring all the flash settings in the app. “It is so easy, it’s like the Pro-11 comes to you, instead of you having to go to it”, remarked a photographer’s assistant who experienced the Pro-11 in action at a recent shoot.

Should you prefer to adjust directly on the flash, you’ll notice a new brighter high-resolution display with an emphasis on simplicity. The Pro-11 might be top of the range, but it’s just as intuitive and easy to use as any other flash in the Profoto family.

“Beyond the added AirX connectivity,” adds Göran Maren, “Pro-11 remains the powerful workhorse that’s lightning fast and utterly reliable – everything you´d expect from Profoto’s flagship”.

Record-breaking flash durations of up to 1/80,000 of a second lets you freeze any action and recycling is so fast that you can even set the fastest cameras on motor drive and let the flash follow. You’ll never miss a shot.

All of this comes in our most durable and rugged package yet; tested to extremes. It looks tough, and it is tough – more than ready to meet the most arduous challenges of any high-end studio shooting.

“Could the Profoto Pro-11 be the ultimate studio flash?” Asks Göran. “We’d like to think so.”

Press Release
Design based on SIGMA’s Art line, with the same uncompromising optical performance
The optical design of the SIGMA 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary is based on the 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Art, which is renowned for its outstanding optical performance throughout its zoom range. True to the Contemporary line’s core concept, the 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary was developed to offer the right balance of performance and portability, and as such, this large-aperture standard zoom delivers outstanding image quality that rivals Art line lenses in a body light enough for day-to-day use. Building on state-of-the-art technology, the 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary has an advanced optical design that includes three aspherical, two FLD, and two SLD elements. Despite using fewer elements in total than the 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Art, the design results in a thorough correction of axial chromatic aberration and sagittal coma aberration, which cannot be corrected in-camera, allowing users to create images that are uniformly sharp from the center to the edges of the frame. Along with its anti-ghosting design, the use of Super Multi-Layer Coating and Nano Porous Coating means well-controlled flare for high-contrast results in backlit conditions. It also features a water and oil repellant coating on the front side of the lens. In short, the SIGMA 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary combines all of the key optical features required of a large-aperture standard zoom lens, which are essential for photographing a wide variety of subjects in a range of shooting conditions.
