Samyang is Teasing Two New Lenses


Samyang is known for having some great glass for astrophotography so it is not surprising that they are teasing that these new lenses would be for Astro, but what they could be is a bit of a mystery. I hope these lenses are revisions of their current lenses, but faster than the lenses currently available. The lens is expected to be announced this month.

FotodioX PRONTO Mark II Leica M-Mount Adapter

I tried the first M-mount adapter on the market for tech art and really enjoyed it, which you can read here. The Pronto adapter came out later and is probably based on software licensed from tech art and now there is a Proton Mark II, which seems to be a slight update that you can read about below:

The PRONTO Leica M-Mount Lens to Sony E-Mount Camera Autofocus Adapter from FotodioX allows traditional, manual-focus Leica M-mount lenses to function as autofocus lenses on select Sony E-Mount mirrorless cameras. By utilizing the camera’s phase detection autofocus (PDAF) system, this adapter’s helical focusing mechanism physically shifts the lens position up to 5mm on the Z axis, enabling autofocus even on manual-focus lenses. It supports both AF-S and AF-C focusing, in addition to face-detect autofocus and 5-axis image stabilization on enabled cameras. An integrated function button allows the user to enter various focus modes as well as setting the focal length and maximum aperture of the lens used on the adapter for optimum compatibility. Also, by utilizing separately available lens adapters with a Leica M-mount, various other lenses may achieve AF with this adapter.

When the lens is set to its close-focus position, the adapter’s extension can be used to achieve macro capabilities, or set the lens to the infinity focus position to enable autofocus within its entire focusing range. Performance is optimal with 50mm lenses and wider, telephoto lenses may require coarse lens focusing before using the adapter for fine tuning via autofocus. This adapter is designed to support lenses weighing up to 1.3 lb.

I have no doubts the Sony FE 50 mm f/2.5 G is a well-put-together lens and if you decide to purchase it you will enjoy its performance. Still the biggest problem is its price, amounting to $600, and a very strong in-house competition. Practically for the same amount of money you can buy the Zeiss Sonnar 1.8/55, a lens faster aperture-wise and very solid; it’s true it won’t provide photos as sharp as those produced by the new Sony but it is an option well liked and appreciated by Sony FE system users; additionally its aperture allows you to play with depth of field in a more creative way. Those who have a limited budget might be tempted by the Sony FE 50 mm f/1.8, a faster lens that is also four times cheaper. –Lenstips

Pros:

  • solid and sealed mechanical construction,
  • excellent image quality in the frame centre,
  • very good image quality on the edge of the APS-C sensor,
  • practically zero lateral chromatic aberration,
  • moderate distortion,
  • properly corrected coma,
  • negligible astigmatism,
  • moderate vignetting on the APS-C sensor,
  • very good performance against bright light,
  • quite fast, silent, and accurate autofocus.

Cons:

  • some problems with longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • high vignetting on full frame,
  • exorbitant price.

One glance at the pros and cons list and you know that you deal where with a well-put-together, efficient lens. It would be difficult to have any serious reservations concerning optical or mechanical properties of the tested instrument and, I suppose, it’s the main point that should be emphasized in the summary. If you decide to buy it you won’t be disappointed for sure. – Lenstips

  • lack of problems with spherical aberration,

Out of the group of three new models, presented by Sony, the 2.8/24, the 2.5/40, and the 2.5/50, the first one was perhaps the most difficult to design. Those difficulties are reflected in the results of our tests. The list of assets is long, with several crucial points – we mean here especially a very good performance in the frame centre, including the maximum relative apertue, and an excellent performance against bright light, so difficult to achieve with such a wide angle of view. – Lenstips

  • huge distortion on RAW files,

Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM vs 50mm f/2.5 G: Image Comparison Video

The new Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM is a pretty big investment but is it worth $1,400 more than the Sony 50mm f/2.5 G? I’m curious if the above video had a different white balance for each lens, but if they were the same the 50mm f/2.5 G has a slight shift in color to my eyes that makes it stand out over the superior accurate color rending of the Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM.

Beyond the color shift, both lenses render images very similarly when set to a similar f stop. Most photographers that will shell out the money for a better lens understand that you’re wasting your money if you aren’t shooting wide open, but the above video also demonstrates how good affordable glass has become.
