New Xenon FF-Prime Cine-Tilt Lenses from Schneider-Kreuznach

New Xenon FF-Prime Cine-Tilt Lenses from Schneider-Kreuznach
World’s first Full Frame Cine Primes to offer dynamic Tilt functionality

To enhance today’s dynamic cinematography, Schneider-Kreuznach introduces Xenon FF-Prime Cine-Tilt lenses. This groundbreaking new version combines similar form-factor and capabilities of the company’s popular Full-Frame Primes with added tilt function up to ±4°. By sustaining the field of view during focus and tilt actions, the new Cine-Tilt design makes possible previously unimaginable images from the freely moving and tilting focus planes. The new lenses offer the potential to utilize out-of-focus areas in the frame, especially when tilt is used with large apertures. A 4° tilt angle at the sensor plane corresponds to an 80° focal plane, which varies according to the focal length and aperture setting selected.

Like Schneider’s standard Xenon FF-Primes, the new version answers today’s practical needs yielding full-frame imagery, beyond 4K, in a lightweight and compact, uniform dimension package. The color-matched lenses feature minimized breathing and a bokeh reminiscent of classic Hollywood. Designed and built in Germany, the new design provides sophisticated mechanics for smooth and accurate tilt action. The lens’ tilt is controlled via a high precision ring with 120° rotation that is as intuitive to operate as pulling focus. Due to the common 0.8 module gear, the Cine-Tilt is usable with standard follow-focus systems.

Cine-Tilt lenses offer the multifold benefits of standard Xenon FF-Primes plus tilt functionality, so there’s is no need to swap out lenses during a shot. With the tilt set at 0° the Cine-Tilt lenses provide identical images as the standard FF-Primes. The consistent set comprises focal lengths of 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 75mm and 100mm – all at T2.1.

Cine-Tilt FF-Primes will be available this spring individually or as a set, in Sony E-Mount.

The Sony a99II and Sony RX100V vs Panasonic LX10/15

Kai seems to really love the Sony a99II for shooting action. Saying “This is immense…This is insane… There is virtually no viewfinder black out… (laughter)…”, but he isn’t overly impressed with low light or video performance. The Sony a99II is great DSLR for photographers, but videographers might want to get a a7RII instead.

Then CameraStoreTV compare the Sony RX100V and Panasonic LX10/LX15 in the freezing cold. The Sony wins the most categories, but the Panasonic has the better lens. Panasonic would probably be far better off doing something new rather than chasing after the Sony RX100.

Techart Pro Follow-up

Techart Pro has grown a lot since my original review and it is now widely avalibe (B&H Photo/Amazon/Adorama), but I haven’t seen a lot of great reviews of the adapter until now. Mirrorless Rumors did a great job reviewing the adapter in video form and Techart Pro seems to be endorsing the use of heavier lenses now in their latest promotional video. I look forward to seeing how this adapter continues to grow and I hope to see it on other camera systems soon.

Gariz Sony a6500 Half Case

Gariz’s half case for the Sony a6500 is now available on Amazon in Black, Brown, Camel Brown and Orange. These cases also support Gariz’s sling system (Black and Brown), which I have used before and it works very well.

DXO: Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 Review

This is certainly surprising and conflicts with Lensrentals results. Did Lensrentals get several flawed lenses or did DXO get one really good lens? Hopefully Lensrentals will follow up with the results. I am sure many would like to know where the discrepancy is coming from.

“In terms of the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8, it’s not only the sharpest and best low-light zoom lens we’ve tested for the a7R II, it also outperforms many FE-mount prime lens options, ranking as the fourth-sharpest lens we’ve tested on the a7R II. Resolution at f/2.8 is first-class between 100 and 200mm, and peak sharpness of over 80% acutance in the field occurs between f/4 and f/8 for phenomenally sharp results on the a7R II.”

You can read DXO’s full report here. We will continue to watch and report as things unfold. I just might have to try one of these lenses out.
