Philip Bloom Video Auto-Focus Mega Test Finale

The finale of Philip Bloom’s Mega Video Auto Focus Test is finally here with his real world tests. According to Bloom Sony lenses autofocus better in video than Canon ones do, but Canon lenses are more mechanical so they are better for manual focus videographers. The only CDAF camera in this test that does well at all is the Panasonic GH4, but the phase detect haters have a noticeable advantage. Below I listed everything he tested or talked about across his 3 videos, but I might have missed some, because the test is crazy big. Bloom doesn’t really pick a favorite, but he seems to favor the Sony and Canon cameras, but Sony updates their line-up more frequently than Canon.

On the Sonys he uses the

I wish he included the Fujifilm X-T2 in the test, but he hasn’t done a lot of Fujifilm work in the past.

DXO: Sony Carl Zeiss Plannar T* FE 50mm f/1.4 ZA Review

LensRentals first reported that the Sony Carl Zeiss Plannar T* FE 50mm f/1.4 ZA is a great lens and now DXO is backing it up in their database. I am really glad I invested in this lens, but I wish I spend more time shooting it. DXO wasn’t joking when they say it’s a big lens.

Conclusion

Adding a very fast f/1.4 maximum aperture option to the Sony/Zeiss 50mm lineup will be welcomed by Sony a7 shooters looking for a high-performance, general-use, low-light lens.

Costing $1498, it’s a pretty expensive option, and at 108mm in length and weighing 778g, it’s a fairly bulky bit of glass for use on the smaller Sony mirrorless cameras, too. If you’re after the best results from your a7 series hybrid at 50mm, however, the Zeiss FE 50mm f/1.4 is outstanding, delivering some of the best low-light performance and sharpness possible in this category.

The large manual focus ring, MF/AF switch and physical aperture ring with ‘de-click’ option make it versatile for videographers, and for stills shooters its bright light transmission and SSW motor should facilitate excellent autofocus performance even in low light.
