Lensbaby, the leader in award-winning creative effect camera lenses, is launching its revolutionary Obscura lens. A camera obscura, ancestor of the photographic camerais a darkened room with a small hole or lens at one side through which an image is projected onto a wall or table opposite the hole. Dating back to the 4th century BCE, this experience is the earliest image projection technique known to the industry.

Lensbaby is hosting a virtual launch party on June 21st where the newest Obscura lens will be revealed. Free tickets are available on Lensbaby’s website.

The Lensbaby Obscura comes in two versions — a 50mm Pinhole/Zone Plate/Pinhole Sieve optic for their Optic Swap System, and a standalone 16mm Pinhole/Zone Plate/Pinhole Sieve pancake lens (though pinholes are not technically lenses) for mirrorless cameras. Read More »

MonsterAdapter LA-FE1 Nikon F Mount to Sony E mount Adapter Update

The MonsterAdapter LA-FE1 Nikon F Mount to Sony E mount Adapter was announced a little while ago, but MonsterAdapter has been slow to release this new adapter since its announcement. The other day MonsterAdapter announced that it’s Nikon F to Sony E mount adapter would be shipping soon in Japan so I checked US retailers and it looks like the adapter will start shipping in the US in Mid July according to B&H Photo.

Sony E 16-55mm f/2.8 G Review

Optical limits reviewed the Sony E 16-55mm f/2.8 G and they came away impressed as long as you allow the camera to digitally correct the optical flaws. Read the full review here.

Let’s get the elephant in the room out of the way immediately – the Sony E 16-55m f/2.8 G is not meant to be used without image auto-correction – Sony is making this clear in the settings as well. You can’t switch off distortion correction for JPGs. While this may be disappointing at this price point, most users won’t really care about this question anyway.

With activated image auto-correction it’s probably the best APS-C standard zoom lens there is on the market today. It shows no weakness in terms of image resolution and there are no CAs to speak of. The corrected distortions are – obviously – nothing to worry about. There is still some visible vignetting at f/2.8 but it’s not excessive and stopping down helps, of course. The quality of the bokeh is on a decent level for a standard zoom lens. Out-of-focus highlights are a bit busy but mostly circular and the general rendition is impressively smooth actually.

The build quality is very high but we expected no less from a G-class lens. Sony used quality materials and implemented sealing against the elements. The lens extends during zooming. This may not be ideal but if you want to achieve a decent optical quality, it’s still the way to go for all manufacturers. The AF is pretty speedy and silent. The biggest drawback is probably the lack of an image stabilizer. If you own an A6500/A6600 you won’t care but the vast majority of Sony APS-C users can’t use in-camera stabilization. That being said … if you can afford the rather expensive Sony E 16-55mm f/2.8 G you probably tend to have the latest and greatest camera body anyway. While Sony’s APS-C lens lineup is still far from being complete, it has now assembled an interesting gang of quality zoom lenses – the Sony E 10-18mm f/4 OSS, E 16-55mm f/2.8 G, and E 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS represent a quite compelling compact and low-weight combo.

DPRTV: Tamron 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD

Tamron has been making some great glass for E-mount cameras and the Tamron 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD seems to live up to the expectations of fans so it should not be missed. Below is a summary of DPRTV’s findings:

  • Very easy to carry even though it is a bit bulky but not heavy
  • 1.88kg or 4.15lbs
  • Mirrorless telephoto design
  • No teleconverters
  • Pretty compact
  • Tight and solid feel
  • Nice zoom ring that locks if you push it forward
  • Nice balanced tripod arm that is cut for arca swiss
  • No mechanical click for rotating the camera around the collar
  • The manual focus ring is a little sloppy
  • Vibration control switch and AF/MF plus focus limiter
  • Linear motor focuses fast and silently
  • Max frame rate 15fps due to Sony locking it out of beyond
  • Minimal breathing, but very well controlled at 500mm
  • No major optical defects
  • Not bad Loca
  • Great for macro at 150mm
  • 1:3 life-size reproduction on a full-frame camera
  • Pretty significant field curvature so if you focus on the center make sure the sides are sharp
  • Very sharp even wide open at 150mm
  • Very sharp wide open at 500mm too
  • Not much of an improvement even stopping down to f/8
  • Soft corners are not an issue on an APS-C body
  • Sits between the Sony 200-600mm and Sigma 100-400mm from its price point to its quality
  • Best for sunny days
