Samyang AF 35mm f/2.8 FE Roundup

The Samyang AF 35mm f/2.8 FE is a great value receiving an almost perfect score from reviewers. It also seems to be particularly good for video too. It’s great that Sony now has several tiers of lenses available for every photographer, but lenses like these might help bring down the price of some of the over priced E-mount glass out like the Sony Zeiss 35mm f2.8.

Sony a9: At The Races, New Metabones Firmware, Banding, vs. Leica SL, and More

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KXz62fS8kE

The Sony a9 is amazing at AF and it’s really hard to miss a shot once you adapt to it. Maarten Heilbron is the latest reviewer to get invited to a Sony preview event and he came away impressed.

The latest Metabones firmware for the Sony a9 appears to be more accurate to me but looks a little slower than the previous version. Hopefully, Metabones finetunes their adapter soon.

Jared came across some “banding” issues in 2% of his photos, but DPReview has quickly dispelled his assertion that it was banding. The a9 is so fast and clinical when you crank up the shutter speed that it catches light and motion in ways that classical cameras do not. Jared “banding” issue had to do with the led scoreboards in the background. You can kind of see this effect with a camera phone and cheap LED’s. I found this out about this issue years ago when shopping for LED lighting for my bathroom.

Leica review talks about how the Leica SL and Sony a9 compare in the above video. When the Leica SL came out the Sony a7 series of cameras were the only competitor and in some ways, the SL was the better, but it was always a much bigger, heavier, and more expensive camera. Now that the Sony a9 is available the Leica SL is a dated, but more mature system. It’s hard to predict if Leica will be able to keep up with the technology of the professional Sony a9 going forward since they have trouble getting access to the latest and greatest sensors. Maybe Leica will focus on image quality and resolution going forward instead of speed like they did with the release of the Leica SL. Sony has a huge advantage releasing high-performance cameras at this time since they produce the best sensors on the market and Samsung stopped trying to compete with them.

Fotodiox DLX Stretch Adapter For Sony

Fotodiox has announced an interesting new line of lens adapters that make otherwise dumb adapters more functional. In addition to adapting glass, they allow the use of magnetic filters in the adapter and the adjustment of the position of the lens in order to add macro functionality. The use of a magnet to hold a filter in the adapter seems very useful, but I wish the filter was held between the adapter and lens instead of the camera and adapter since the sensor is left largely exposed in Sony cameras. A filter coming loose during a drop could be catastrophic.

Lens Rentals: Sony FE 12-24mm f/4 G MTF Results

charts courtesy of lensrentals

Lensrentals ran their MTF test on the Sony FE 12-24mm f/4 G and the results are very good. Not only is the Sony 12-24mm an extremely sharp lens, but it’s actually very small for its design. Sony’s latest batch of lenses has been quite good, with the exception of some quality control issues.

“The MTF results tell you if the lens should be a sharp lens, and the results here indicate that it should. That makes it worth further investigation for those of you interested in this focal length. It’s one of the more impressive Sony offerings that have come out; reasonable price, excellent MTF, reasonable sample variation.

There is something that is more interesting to me in the bigger picture, though. Sony has made this lens smaller than the others in this range, which will be nice sitting on an FE camera. And they’ve done that without the customary ‘Sony surcharge’, which is nice on  your wallet. At this point, I can’t help but be very impressed.”

You can read the full results here.

CameraStoreTV: Sony a99 Mark II

Camera Store TV finally got around to reviewing the Sony a99 Mark II and they still aren’t sure that Sony is going to continue supporting A-mount after this camera since the release of the Sony a9. I would have to agree with them, that the Sony a9 as a proof of consept basicly brings mirrorless in line with mirrored cameras now and even surpases them in some ways. Maybe Sony will release a camera ever couple of years for die hard fans if they sell well enough, but I doubt Sony will ever fully support the Camera like they are E-mount.
