DPRTV: Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD FE

Tamron has been releasing great glass for mirrorless cameras lately and the Tamron 28-200mm seems to be in line with the rest of their releases. Above you can watch DPR’s review and below is a summary:

  • very light 576g or 1/4 Noct or 1.27lbs
  • You have to push your ISO to get faster shutter speeds
  • IBIS only in the body not on the lens
  • The lens could use OIS
  • Lots of purple chromatic aberration, but it is fixable
  • Minimal focus distance wide end 19cm and telephoto 80cm ends up being almost the same framing
  • FE 24-240 has more range at telephoto and wide-angle
  • The FE24-240 is f/3.5 while the 28-200mm is f/2.8 so 2/3 of a stop faster at the wide and 1/3 brighter at the telephoto
  • AF speed is good from near to far
  • Sunstars and bokeh is ok
  • Center is decent and corners are a little soft until f/5.6 at 28mm
  • 28mm f/8 is very consistent across the frame
  • 200mm f/5.6 is a little sharper than the 28mm but the corners are still a little soft until f/8
  • This lens is sharp for a superzoom
  • Acceptable quality for the price point
  • You can get away with shooting wide open in the center
  • Minimal breathing for video
  • It comes down to this being a very good superzoom but it isn’t going to replace your more specialized lenses
