Sony Officially Warns Of Laser Damage

It’s pretty common knowledge that focused light sources like lasers can damage your sensor along with shooting intense light sources like the Sun with a telephoto lens, but Sony has now put out an official statement in relation to lasers:

Can the camera image sensor be damaged by laser?
Do not directly expose the Lens to beams such as laser beams. This may cause damage to the image sensor and cause the camera to malfunction.

Note: In either outdoor or indoor environment when there is a laser display, tendency of direct or indirect (laser beam bounce from reflective object) damage to the camera CMOS Sensor is still very high. – Sony

I hope manufactures are able to overcome these limitations in the future because lasers can look really cool in photos, but it’s probably not the best idea to risk thousands of dollars of equipment just to get a shot unless you’re being very well compensated for the high risk.

DPRTV: Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 Di III-A RXD vs Sony E 10-18mm f/4 OSS

DPRTV posted its review/comparison of the Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 Di III-A RXD vs Sony E 10-18mm f/4 OSS. Below is a summary of the video above:

  • Fells the same as other Tamron zooms
  • Lightweight only about 335g or 0.74lbs
  • 67mm filter just like the other Tamron lenses for E-mount
  • Weather-resistant
  • Consistent build quality in their lineup
  • Would have been nice to have an AF/MF switch
  • No IBIS
  • Autofocus is very good
  • Some breathing during manual focus
  • Almost not LoCA and the lens is overall very well controlled
  • Great macro ability on paper 1:4 at 11mm but focusing minimum focus distance is about 6 inches
  • Macro is very usable at 20mm with better corners etc
  • Flare is well controlled
  • Sun stars arent very beautiful
  • Ghosting when stopping down too far
  • Bokeh has a good out of focus transition
  • Very sharp wide open at all focal lengths but the corners can be a little soft and the corners improve at f/5.6
  • You will like this lens even at 11mm wide open
  • Another great lens from Tamron
  • The Sony only adds optical stabilization, but it isn’t needed
  • DPRTV hopes all of Tamron’s APS-C lenses come to X-mount in the future

Optical Limits: Tamron 35mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M 1:2 – Superb Center Sharpness Wide Open

Optical limits posted its Tamron 35mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M 1:2 review and it looks like Tamron’s primes are every bit as good as their zooms. You can read the full review here or read the a sumary below:

In terms of optical performance, the Tamron 35mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 is a high-quality lens. The center sharpness is absolutely superb. The outer image field shows no weakness even at f/2.8 but it stays short of truly excellent results even when stopped down. Image distortions and lateral CAs are negligible even in RAW images. However, the vignetting is very heavy at f/2.8 unless you activate image auto-correction. It’s not the fastest prime lens around so it’s not a bokeh monster to start with. The rendering of out-of-focus highlights is Ok for a moderate prime lens.

While the optical performance is commendable, the same can’t really be said of the build quality. This is a budget lens and you can feel it. The use of plastics is perfectly Ok – even professional-grade lenses use them nowadays. However, there are plastics and there are plastics. In this case, they are fairly cheap. Of course, this doesn’t mean that it can’t do the job. It just doesn’t provide joy. The rather sluggish AF doesn’t help with this either. On the positive side, the lens features some degree of sealing against moisture. Some may also appreciate the close focus capabilities with a magnification of up to 1:2.
