Same chip as the a7RII but different front end LSI that helps with speed and image quality. S-Log 3 and higher frame rates are the advantages over the A7 along with gamma assists. Not at liberty to say if the a7RII will get S-Log 3 in the future.

A mount translucent mirror focusing uses a hybrid phase detection system and affectively the 79 hybrid points are cross type points because of the way they work. There is also a new menu system that should be better than past Sony menu systems. Lets hope that they patch this into the a7 series.

iPhone 7 Image Sensors Made by Sony

It looks like apple is continuing to use Sony sensors in their latest iPhone according to Chipworks‘ teardown.

“The iSight camera chip was sourced from Sony and fabricated using its Exmor RS technology platform. The 12 MP chip features a Bayer RGB color filter array (CFA) and embedded phase detection autofocus (PDAF) pixels. The die size is 5.16 mm x 6.25 mm (32.3 mm2) as measured from the edges of the die stack. We expect our planned analysis will show the CMOS image sensor (CIS) die to be fabricated by Sony in its 90 nm technology generation. The through silicon via (TSV) patterning tells us it’s a 2nd generation Exmor RS sensor and not 3rd generation Exmor RS with direct bond interconnect (DBI). The TSVs are used to connect the CIS chip to an underlying image signal processor (ISP), which is not to be confused with the complementary ISP functions embedded within the A10 chip.”

“iPhone 7’s FaceTime camera resolution has been bumped up to 7 MP. The front-facing Facetime camera module is 6.8 mm x 6.0 mm x 4.3 mm thick and contains a Sony Exmor RS chip, also featuring 2nd generation TSVs. Our preliminary analysis of the 5.05 mm x 3.72 mm (18.8 mm2) FaceTime camera chip reveals a 1.0 µm pitch Bayer RGB CFA.

Sony and Profoto Collaboration

Sony and Profoto announce Collaboration and first interoperable product for serious photographers
At Photokina 2016 in Cologne, Germany, Sony today announced collaboration with Profoto with the aim of providing visionary photographers a platform to bring their creative and ambitious visions to life.

This collaboration allows for optimized compatibility between Profoto flashes and light shaping tools and Sony interchangeable lens cameras (ILC). Sony has licensed the technical specifications forfour[i]of its ILC models to Profoto which enables them to develop product which provides a rich light shaping experience for Sony α camera users.

Yosuke. Aoki, Head of Pan European Product Marketing, Digital Imaging and Vice President of Sony Europe Ltd. commented: “The passion for enabling great photography is one that we share with Profoto and we are excited that Sony α users will be able to broaden their shooting possibilities.”

The first product in the Profoto line-up to benefit from the collaboration is the Profoto Air Remote TTL-S that wirelessly integrates a Profoto AirTTL flash with select Sony αcamerasi. Air Remote TTL-S is a small, wireless radio transmitter that attaches to the Sony camera’s hotshoe. The remote allows TTL metering with any Profoto AirTTL flash. In TTL Mode, the user just points and shoots, and the Air Remote TTL-S will communicate with the flash to automatically give a perfect exposure. The Air Remote TTL-S also comes with patent-pending Profoto High-speed Sync technology – faster, more powerful and more consistent than any other HSS solution on the market.

Sony announces the Sony a99II with pro build quality 42MP sensor, A mount SLT, 300,000+ shutter operation life and dust/mosture resistant. I am very surprised to see this camera at $3,199.
