Sony IR Day 2018 took place today and image-sensors-world picked out some key points from their presentations and press release. It looks like Sony is taking applications beyond smartphones seriously now to maintain their position as the top sensor producer in the world.
“In the area of CMOS image sensors that capture the real world in which we all live, and are vital to KANDO content creation, aim to maintain Sony’s global number one position in imaging applications, and become the global leader in sensing.
Through the key themes of KANDO – to move people emotionally – and “getting closer to people,” Sony will aim to sustainably generate societal value and high profitability across its three primary business areas of electronics, entertainment, and financial services. It will pursue this strategy based on the following basic principles.
CMOS image sensors are key component devices in growth industries such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, and more. Sony’s competitive strength in this area is based on its wealth of technological expertise in analog semiconductors, cultivated over many years from the charge-coupled device (CCD) era. Sony aims to maintain its global number one position in imaging and in the longer term become the number one in sensing applications. To this end, Sony will extend its development of sensing applications beyond the area of smartphones, into new domains such as automotive use.
…based on its desire to contribute to safety in the self-driving car era, Sony will work to further develop its imaging and sensing technologies.”

The Japanese Camera Journal Press Club picked the Sony a9 as their camera of the year for 2018.
Reason for selection
A historical one that makes you feel the possibility of future cameras. It has high performance as a mirrorless machine adopting a 35 mm full-size image sensor. The possibility of a mirrorless camera using the electronic shutter as the main instead of the mechanical shutter was demonstrated by the high speed reading of the built-in 35 mm full size stacked CMOS image sensor. It realizes continuous shooting of up to 20 frames / second and elimination of blackout of the electronic viewfinder with AF / AE tracking in silent shooting with an image with little distortion though it is an electronic shutter. The AF performance is also high, the precision by the image surface phase difference AF of 693 points covering about 93% of the screen is high, and the pupil AF which recognizes the human eyes and focuses also has high trackability. The impression of the mirrorless camera is changed from the ground, and it is made to feel that there is a shooting scene, what can be taken because of this camera because it is a still picture or a moving picture. A camera that answers professional applications. Many of the selection committee appreciated their advancedness highly.

The reviews are rolling in for the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD and most reviewers are calling it the best mid-range standard-zoom for E-Mount at this time. It easily bests the Sony Zeiss 24-70mm f/4, while coming close to matching the Sony G-master 24-70 f/2.8 at a fraction of the price. Of course, some might need a 24mm wide over a 28mm wide, but if that isn’t a factor than the Tamron is probably the lens for you.

Brian Murphy gives a great first look at the Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS and he spots just about everything the lens has to offer physically. It’s kind of interesting that Sony still has the lens labeled as underdevelopment since it was at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and B&H Photo has had a listing for quite some time. I wonder what kind of volume this lens will be produced in when it is read because if it’s very limited Sony could delay finalizing the design right up until launch. I know these lenses tend to be very limited demand, but I’m sure Sony will want to mass produce them for the Toyko Olympics so they can have a showing and possibly become the camera of choice for that event.
