Sony FE400 f/2.8 G-Master Sneak Peek

Brian Murphy gives a great first look at the Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS and he spots just about everything the lens has to offer physically. It’s kind of interesting that Sony still has the lens labeled as underdevelopment since it was at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and B&H Photo has had a listing for quite some time. I wonder what kind of volume this lens will be produced in when it is read because if it’s very limited Sony could delay finalizing the design right up until launch. I know these lenses tend to be very limited demand, but I’m sure Sony will want to mass produce them for the Toyko Olympics so they can have a showing and possibly become the camera of choice for that event.

Luminous Landscape Turns Sony Fanboy Site?

It’s interesting when Kevin Raber for Luminous Landscape comes out and makes such a firm stance about mirrorless superiority and why it’s innovations have made him into a fanboy. Personally, I singled out the technology when Panasonic/Olympus launched m43 and I largely stuck with mirrorless cameras over the years, because it was clear to me they would have the edge someday, but now Sony truly is leading the way for the entire industry.

Kevin Raber singles out Sony, Fujifilm, Olympus and finally Leica for leading the way, but underneath is Sony innovation. Leica is the only company not using Sony parts at this time in their flagship mirrorless cameras, but maybe that will change someday soon because Sony does have an undeniable technological lead. Kevin also mentions how he hopes Canon and Nikon catch up to the rest of the industry and I am sure we all feel that way because competition is good for us the consumers, but right now the mirrorless battle is largely between two companies Sony and Fujifilm.

If you enjoy technology and innovation in the slightest Sony and Fujifilm are the companies to follow right now, because Canon and Nikon haven’t released anything truly innovative in a few generations now. Sure you can take a great picture with just about any camera, but mirrorless is making new types of photography and videography possible right now. Sony, Fujifilm, Panasonic, Olympus and yes even Leica are the future of photography and the new Sony a7III BASIC CAMERA raises the bar for the entire industry. The next generation of mirrorless cameras from Fujifilm, Panasonic, and Olympus with Sony inside should be very exciting considering where we are at today. Photokina 2018 can’t come soon enough.

IR Sony CP+ Interview: High ISO, AI AF, Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS, and More

Image-Resource just published their CP+ interview with Sony. Below are some excerpts:

  • Sony thinks they can continue to increase high ISO performance
  • Pixel surface area matters more than the depth
  • Sony thinks IR gets a little too deep for readers when they continue to push for how Sony will improve performance
  • Sony just wants it understood that only they have the sensor technology that allows for good high ISO performance right now and will continue to push the mirrorless market forward
  • To get AF tracking right you have to go beyond pixel data and go to object oriented tracking
  • Having the imaging and AF data together lets this smart AF system work in a way DSLR’s can not
  • At some point in the future, the camera might have some AI involved inside for tracking
  • Currently, Sony is using general computing for AF, but by the time next gen CPUs come out for cameras, Sony thinks they could have AI in the camera for AF.
  • Frame rates are getting fast, but currently, there isn’t a great method for taking a frame out of the video for photography.
  • Video and photos also require a different mindset
  • Sony tests 100 different types of AF scenarios when developing their AF system
  • For developing their long telephoto AF they have gone beyond testing 100 different types of AF
  • Sports and nature require a lot of additional testing and Sony is putting addition thought into their interface
  • The 400mm f/2.8 was developed to satisfy sports and nature photographers
  • The 400mm f/2.8 will be light and it balances well on their current bodies
  • Once again APS-C hasn’t been forgotten
