DPRTV: Laowa 24mm f/14 Relay 2x Macro Field Test

Laowa’s new 24mm f/14 Relay 2x Macro is a very unique lens that allows photographers to turn pebbles into boulders with it’s 1:1+ capability. This unique lens is a little pricey on Kickstarter, but I would love to use one someday. It’s good to see that the lens works well with an adapter since most of the reviewers have had to use an adapter if they prefer a camera other than Canon mount at this time. This lens looks like a great exploration lens and I love the results. You can see more about this lens on Laowa’s website if you’re interested.

LEX Optical E-Mount Film Camera Schematics and Firmware Released on Github

Sony E-mount has proven to be incredibly popular and LEX Optical announced their intention to release the first film E-mount camera a few months ago as a result. Now they have released their Schematics and Firmware on GitHub if you’re interested in trying to build your own camera. LEX Optical is definitely worth keeping an eye on if you enjoy shooting film and already own a lot of E-mount glass, but I’m curious to see how tinkers might build off their design going forward.

Tokina Firin 20mm f/2 Roundup

The Tokina Firin 20mm F2 FE AF is a great value and it can even top the more expensive Zeiss Loxia 21mm f/2.8 for most tasks. If Sony ever fully corrects their star eater issue, I will be adding this to my camera bag.

Sony Announced FY2018 Q1 Results

Sony has grown their imaging division substantially since they launched their mirrorless full frame cameras and they now have a very respectable 29 native E-mount full frame lenses to choose from. No one is going to have a mirrorless full frame camera system capable of matching Sony for at least a few years thanks to this lead and if you think adapted lenses will do then Sony could include their old Alpha SLT and Minolta lenses with Sony’s SLT adapter.

Below are some key excerpts from Sony’s financial report:

FY18 Q1 sales were essentially flat year-on-year at 202.2 billion yen. Although insurance recoveries related to the Kumamoto Earthquakes were recorded in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year, sales of image sensors primarily for mobile devices increased. Operating income decreased 26.3 billion yen year-on-year to 29.1 billion yen.

We have upwardly revised our FY18 sales forecast to 890 billion yen and operating income to 120 billion yen. This change is primarily due to the positive impact of foreign exchange rates.

On July 23, we announced the release of an image sensor which has an ultracompact pixel size of 0.8 microns, making it possible to pack 48 effective megapixels into a 1/2-type unit. 0.8 micron is a world first, and 48 mega pixels is the highest pixel count in the industry. One of our strengths is our unparalleled ability to develop cutting-edge technology that also has a practical use, well ahead of our competitors. We aim to continue this advanced product development going forward.
