Photons to Photos: Sony a6400 Dynamic Range Results

Photons to Photos added the Sony a6400 to their database and not much has changed from the Sony a6300 or a6500, which both fall behind the Fujifilm X-T20 throughout much of the measured ISO range. Strangely the Sony a6400’s performance falls off past 6400 ISO in a way the other cameras do not. You can see and manipulate the results here.

DXO: Sony a7RIII vs Nikon Z7 vs Sony a7RII vs Nikon D850

The Nikon Z7 is an impressive performer, but if you’re going to capture photos above 800 ISO the Sony a7RIII is king.

“the 45.7MP Nikon Z 7’s scores are very close to those of the 42.4MP Sony A7R III. While the Z 7 leads for color depth and dynamic range, the A7R III copes better with low light.”

It’s also interesting to note that the Sony a7RII still performs very well against the modern Sony a7RIII and Nikon Z7/Nikon D850, but it was released back in 2015. Today you can purchase a Sony a7RII for under 2k from most retailers, which makes it a great option if you do not need blazing fast AF. You can see the rest of DXO’s results here.
