First SIGMA 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art Review

By Louis Ferreira | Published: December 10, 2019

SIGMA 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

Sony alpha blog posted the first review of the SIGMA 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art and it is a very positive one. Below you can see the summary of their findings and you can read the full review here in English (The Blue Text) and French. It sounds like the new Sigma and Tamron are better choices for most photographers over Sony’s expensive G Master line.

Pros

  • Excellent to outstanding centre sharpness on A7RIV between 35 and 70mm
  • Moderate price
  • Excellent smooth blurry background
  • Very Good Bokeh Balls with no artifacts and well rounded
  • Very Good build quality and ergonomics
  • Very good color rendition
  • Weather sealed
  • Short focusing distance
  • Fast and reliable and silent AF
  • Very Low CA except at 70mm (moderate)

Average

  • Visible distorsion and moderate vignetting but that should be corrected in a future Lightroom Lens profile (not worse than the Tamron or the Sony)
  • Resistance to flare is not a the level of what we have on Prime but Sony and Tamron have also same issue
  • Weight 830g (but lighter than the Sony 886g)
  • 24mm sharpness less good than Sony but roughly similar to Tamron at 28mm
  • Corners sharpness only reaching very good levels max and good at 50mm

Cons

  • None at this price point

DPRTV: Tamron 35mm f/2.8 vs Sony Zeiss 35mm f/2.8

By Louis Ferreira | Published: December 7, 2019

DPRTV compare the newly released Tamron 35mm f/2.8 vs Sony Zeiss 35mm f/2.8. Below are excerpts from the video:

  • 2.8 primes can be very compact which is probably why they exist
  • Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 is the most compact
  • Zeiss is 132g the Tamron is 210g
  • Tamron has a larger diameter with 67mm filters and the Sony takes 49mm
  • Most modern Tamron lenses have a 67mm filter thread
  • Not much difference in the center sharpness
  • Wide-open in the corners, the Tamron is noticeably better than the Zeiss
  • The Zeiss has a metal focus ring that is great
  • Tamron focus ring is plastic and has play
  • Zeiss has tons of LOCA with a magenta shift in the foreground and bright cyan in the background
  • Tamron is well controlled with a slight magenta ting in the foreground and slight green in the background, but very well controlled
  • The Tamron has a plastic feel, but it is weather sealed
  • The Sony doesn’t have a rubber gasket
  • Tamron is very slow to focus
  • Sony has fast AF
  • Tamron wins for minimum focus distance
  • Bokeh is very similar, but the Tamron is a little less busy and cleaner
  • Sony has focus breathing, but the Tamron has more
  • Tamron handles flare well with a little bit of purple
  • The Sony Zeiss has better flare control
  • The Tamron is half the price of the Sony
  • The Tamron 35mm f/2.8 is the clear winner in DPRTV’s opinion
