Sirui 50mm f/1.8 Anamorphic Update

We previously covered the Sirui 50mm f/1.8 Anamorphic here, but it looks like some details have changed because Sirui previously quoted $550, which has turned into €700 or $771.64 US. These lenses will be available for Sony, Fujifilm and Panasonic users. The new lens will be available in January 2020. I might pick some of these up just because I have been enjoying anamorphic photography quite a bit lately.

There will also be some more lenses:

The optics are manufactured by Sirui in a new facility they built a few years ago. It has taken two years to develop and manufacture the first 50mm model. Sirui has plans to make a wide and telephoto version as well. Actual focal lengths are not set as of yet, however, a 24mm or 85mm is probably the ones they will go for.

Sirui products can be found on Amazon

Interview: Sony Want’s The Mirrorless Market To Expand – If 1% of Smartphone Users Go Mirrorless The Market Will Double

Newswitch interviewed Yasuyuki Nagata Senior General Manager Sony Imaging Products & Solutions. Below are translated excerpts from the interview:

  • The introduction of more high-end cameras is exciting and will help increase lens purchases
  • There are more high value-added and high-priced options than ever and the trend should continue for three years
  • Sony has around 60 lenses already, but still have dozens in mind to expand the number of people interested in their cameras
  • There was more interest than expected in the 200-600mm
  • I am concerned about the rise in material costs, but I will not compromise for miniaturization and weight reduction of the product
  • The one mount strategy has worked for Sony and it lets photographers interchange their lenses more freely
  • The cost of camera/lens development is on the rise and Sony is doing their best to deal with it
  • Smartphones are a big part of the market and if 1% of smartphone photographers got interested in mirrorless it would double the market
  • Smartphones currently fail at telephoto and wide-angle photography
  • Compact cameras like the RX0 are still growing, but other areas are remaining consistent

DPRTV: Sony a6600 First Impressions – Just an Evolution and Not a Revolution

DPRTV did a first impressions video for the a6600 and it brings up many of the Sony a6600’s shortcomings. The a6600 is an impressive value, but Sony could have done a lot better.

Pro

  • The new grip to fit the Z Battery feels great
  • Z Batteries
  • 11 fps
  • Real-Time Tracking AF
  • The camera is weather-sealed and so are the new lenses
  • Full flip screen

Con

  • The larger grip should have a front dial
  • Would be great to have an AF joystick on the back
  • One card slot
  • Not UHS-II so the buffer is slow to empty
  • The EVF is only decent and X-T3 far surpasses it
  • No on-camera flash
  • Old sensor make electronic shutter unusable and video isn’t great
  • Should have the 26MP sensor that the X-T3 uses
  • Weather sealing could be better
  • Panorama mode missing for no good reason
  • Realtime AF in video only works by touching the LCD
  • Very much like an a6500, but with Z battery and Real-time AF

IBIS and Real-Time AF are the only two features that the a6600 has above the Fujifilm X-T3.
