Image Sensor World spotted a new three-layer stacked organic image sensor from Sony at the 2019 international electron devices meeting.
“A three-layer stacked color image sensor was formed using an organic film. The sensor decreases the false color problem as it does not require demosaicing. Furthermore, with the 2.0-μm pixel image sensor, improved spectral characteristics owing to green adsorption by the organic film above the red/blue photodiode, were successfully demonstrated.“
The TTArtisan 11mm f/2.8 fisheye lens that was announced here and is available on Amazon. Has had a lot of samples released across weibo this week. Which you can see above and below.
The Sigma 45mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary that was launched this year should have been placed in the Art series of Sigma lenses according to optical limits testing. They found a lot to like about the lens in their testing and concluded that:
“In terms of optical performance, the results are pretty impressive. The center quality is very sharp at f/2.8 and the outer image field is pretty good, too. Stopped down to medium aperture settings, the center reaches superb levels and the border/corners improve to very good quality. Lateral CAs are quite negligible. However, the native vignetting, as well as image distortion, are relatively high for such a lens but then Sony’s image auto-correction will take care of this. The technical quality of the bokeh is decent albeit not perfect.
The mechanical quality of the lens is nothing short of outstanding and it puts much higher priced offerings to shame. The all-metal construction looks and feels great….If you are nit-picky you may criticize the partial weather-sealing. The AF is fast and silent…
The biggest flaw of the lens doesn’t relate to its characteristic but to its name – it is just no “Contemporary” lens. It is ARTier than some designated ART lenses in Sigma’s lineup for sure…”

The Sony a7 has been marked as discontinued at B&H Photo and Adorama. Amazon still has a few left if you want to pick one up, but it looks like Sony might be stopping the production of the original a7 simply because the price point has fallen too low to be profitable.

DPRTV put together some New Years’ resolutions for the camera companies out there and of course, Sony’s horrible menu system made the list. While Sony has improved its menus marginally over the years they are still not great and many feel that Sony needs to start over again from the start. I personally have never enjoyed their shooting experience, but I know some have learned to live with it and even like it compared to others.
Beyond Sony menus, DPRTV also hit on Sony colors, which have gotten better over the years, but DPRTV feels they should just take their color science from Fujifilm or Canon. It is also about time for Sony to dump lossy RAW compression for lossless compression, which everyone else does.
Last but not least DPRTV wants Sony to release the Sony a7SIII already, which I think most of us can agree with. Sony already released the Sony a7RIV and at this rate, we might even see a Sony a7IV before the Sony a7SIII is announced. Hopefully, the a7SIII will live up to all the hype out there, because a lot of photographers want to get their hands on one.
