PDR: Sony a6600 vs a6500 vs a6400 vs X-T3: Sony Over Takes Fujifilm at Base ISO

Sony wasn’t really taking their APS-C line seriously up until recently with the release of the Sony a6600 and maybe a6400. It’s interesting that the Sony a6600 has a pretty sizable jump at base ISO that the a6400 does not, but the a6600 falls back behind the Fujifilm X-T3 once it reaches 200 ISO and largely remains close up to 6400 ISO.

PDR: Sony a9II vs Sony a9 vs Sony a9 ES

The Sony a9II and Sony a9 sensor are relatively similar with the a9II having a slight lead at base ISO, but it is unclear if these measurements were made with the electronic shutter or not because the Sony a9II results do not list with and without Electronic Shutter (ES). The Low light performance of the a9II and a9 ES are identical and closer in dynamic range than the non-ES a9 measurements, which are lower, but have better low light performance.

Sony a6600 Unboxing and Preview

Patrick Murphy is a Sony photographer that largely shoots sports and he decided to sell his a6000, a6300, a6500 and RX10II for Sony’s new a6600. Below are some of the reasons why he upgraded:

  • Sony Z Battery
  • The books inside the box probably weigh more than the camera
  • Great new grip
  • Likes Sony firmware updates
  • Hates the old W battery
  • Better low light
  • IBIS
  • Realtime Tracking
  • Great for street photography
  • Great for sports
  • Great for remotes
  • New E 16-55mm F2.8 G
  • A good camera to get people to switch
  • The same lens mount as their full-frame
  • Can get very low to the ground

Best Lenses of 2019 by The Art of Photography

Ted Forbs picked 3 Sony lenses for his best-of list with the lens of the year being a sleeper that Ted has to get for himself since Sony didn’t have an event for its launch the Sony FE 35mm f/1.8. Ted based his picks on Optics, Feature, Price, and Size.

Best Ultrawide
Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art – very sharp, but no filter threading
Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S – extremely sharp and hs filter threads

Best Wide
Fujinon XF16mm f/2.8 R WR – Very compact and you will get 90% of what you will get from the 16mm f/1.4 which is one of his favorites
Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM – Very practical and well priced for amazing optics

Best Normal
Panasonic Lumix S PRO 50mm f/1.4 – expensive but incredible reference lens

Best Short Telephoto
Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM – Incredible lens that lens rentals calls the sharpest lens they have ever tested

Best Long Telephoto
Sony FE 600mm f/4 GM OSS – No lens compares including the Sony 400mm f/2.8

Best Lens of 2019
Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 – complete sleeper with great bokeh

Sony a9II vs Sony a9 Buffer Testing

Tag The Shooter posted the first a9 vs a9II comparison I have seen showing off the new and improved Sony a9II buffer. His testing is a bit rough and he gets a bit lost with his words so the data below is the most valuable thing from the video since I wrote it while watching. Tag tries to remain scientific but forgets a few steps at times so the picture counts aren’t always accurate.

He also confuses card and camera names in the video towards the end which makes it a bit hard to follow. Below you can find the data and the cards.

5 Second Burst with Single Sony Tough Card
a9: about 34.56 Seconds for 102 pictures
a9II: about 21.3 Seconds for 102 pictures

5 Second Burst with dual Sony Tough Cards
a9: about 34.13 Seconds for 100 pictures
a9II: about 26.25 Seconds for 103 pictures

5 Second Burst with Single Sony G Card
a9: about 28.53 Seconds for 100 pictures
a9II: about 21.63 Seconds for 102 pictures

5 Second Burst with Single Sony M Cards
a9: about 40.77 Seconds for 103 pictures
a9II: about 33.69 Seconds for 103 pictures

5 Second Burst with dual Sony M Cards
a9: about 54.83 Seconds for 107 pictures
a9II: about 27.77 Seconds for 107 pictures

5 Second Burst with Single Sandisk 300MB/s Cards
a9: about 23.66 Seconds for 102 pictures
a9II: about 21.97 Seconds for 105 pictures

5 Second Burst with Single PNY 95MB/s Cards
