Dustin Abbott: Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS – Quick and In-Depth Reviews

Dustin Abbott posted his quick review above and long review below of the Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS and was very impressed with the lens. Below is a summary of the quick review:

  • Variable aperture that switches at about 300mm
  • G lens with OSS (Optical stead shot)
  • Adds a to of reach for a reach for an affordable price
  • Great AF performance especially on a9
  • Better than some of the fixed focal length telephoto options
  • Easy to shoot handheld
  • Very easy to zoom while shooting
  • Weather sealed with focus hold and a rotating tripod collar, but not arca swiss support without a quick release plate
  • 4 switches – AF/MF, focus limiter, steady shot, steady shot mode
  • AF slows a lot in low light but is very accurate
  • Very sharp throughout even though it is a G lens it performs like a GM lens
  • If you stop down to f/8 you get a little more contrast, but even wide open it is good
  • Bokeh is ok
  • Works with 1.4x and 2x teleconverters so you can get up to 1200mm at f/13
  • Dustin wouldn’t go past the 1.4x
  • Do you need 600mm? If not the 100-400mm might be better for you because it is a smaller/lighter combination.
  • Very fairly priced

DXO: Sony RX100VII Tested

The Sony RX100VII is a great pocket camera regardless of the generation and you can read the full DXO review here or check out the conclusion below. I still have the original RX100 and it is my favorite pocket camera and I doubt I will upgrade it until it dies.

With sensors larger than those found in typical compacts, offering 20MP resolution and high image quality with low noise, and with dynamic range approaching that of some interchangeable-lens camera, the Sony Cyber-shot RX100 series has come to define an enthusiast’s advanced compact ever since it was introduced in 2012.

Although it doesn’t quite match the exceptional imaging performance of the previous generation of 1-inch type BSI CMOS sensor, the Sony RX100 VII’s newly-developed “stacked” sensor comes very close. With its built-in DRAM and enhanced PDAF providing a number of benefits, along with the Real-Time Tracking AF feature, it seems a fair tradeoff. All in all, with its new capabilities and solid image quality, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 VII looks like one of the most compelling compacts available.

Photography Blog: Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 Review

Photography Blog released its review of the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 and it is very positive, but reviews have varied so I wonder if Sigma might be having some sample variation problems. The most critical was by lens tips, but reviews like Sony Alpha Blog considered the lens to be more middling.

The new Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art is the best all-round standard zoom lens for Sony Alpha full-frame cameras, narrowly beating the excellent Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM, Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD and Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS…. It’s half the price of the Sony FE 24-70mm whilst offering comparable image and build quality. It’s a little more expensive than the Tamron 28-75mm, but out-performs it optically…. if we had to choose one standard zoom… we’d pick the new Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art… it’s tack-sharp in the centre throughout all of the zoom range, with sharpness only falling off a little at f/2.8 at the very edges of the frame… nice bokeh effects… some vignetting at wide-open apertures, barrel distortion at 24mm and slight pincushioning at 70mm… very quick AF… Build quality is excellent…

Overall, the new Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art is a very well-built, very fast standard zoom lens that delivers superb image quality at a frankly unbelievable price, and is therefore a more than worth winner of our highest award.
