Business Insider Japan Sony Executive Interview

Business insider Japan interviewed Shigeki Ishizuka, Representative Director and CEO of Sony Electronics and Ichiro Takagi, Executive Vice President and COO of Sony Electronics. Below is a summary of the interview:

  • COVID affected the Electronics sector first, but it has already begun to recover
  • Sony plans to change the company name on April 1, 2021. The part that has the headquarters function that controls the group has become the “Sony Group”, and it is decided that the current Sony Electronics will become “Sony”.
  • The electronics business decreased by 152.1 billion yen compared to the same period of the previous year
  • For Japan, China, Europe and the United States, the second quarter will return to the same level as the previous year and improve in the fourth
  • We expect impacts to remain in South America, India and parts of Southeast Asia
  • Sony has been impacted since January because events in China caused supply chain issues for Sony
  • “Immediate measures to change the source of purchase from China to other countries and manufacturers”
  • Sony now has two or three suppliers for their parts
  • The sale of big screen TV’s actually increased by as much as 50%
  • When things get tough the premium stuff seems to continue selling well
  • Soundbars also sold very well
  • “As for cameras, environmental factors are still significant. If travel demand does not return, it will be difficult to make a full-scale improvement in sales. However, we expect that demand will surely return for next year and next year,”
  • New cameras like the Sony ZV1 are also having trouble selling since people aren’t going out much
  • “The digital camera market is tough”
  • Sony has been ahead of the competition since 2012, but to be successful you have to maintain a certain scale
  • Video will grow as part of digital cameras
  • “Sony will also launch α (one eye) in the video main.”
  • Imaging Edge Webcam will come to the Mac in the fall
  • Sony is ready for times like these and they will get through it by emphasizing their innovations
  • “In the short term, we will offer what we already have as a solution, but assuming that the situation like Corona will continue, I think we will make products with new technologies. And we will pursue synergies as “new electronics” rather than camera alone.

Specifically, we will aim for a complete fusion of how to integrate the smartphone and camera.

Sony is the only company in the world that has a full-fledged smartphone and camera business. I would like to significantly increase development investment in the telecommunications business that was hard-played and solutions for cameras and professionals, and strengthen the development in the short and long term.” (CEO Ishizuka)”

Venus Optics announce the new Laowa 11mm f/4.5 FF RL lens for full frame cameras – a super compact ultra-wide angle lens with 62mm filter thread (FF = Full Frame, RL = Rectilinear)

Anhui China, Aug 28, 2020 – Venus Optics, the manufacturer specialized in making unique camera lenses, introduced the Laowa 11mm f/4.5 FF RL lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras. The small but potent lens features an ultra-wide 126° AoV with only 254g (8.9 oz.). It is designed with a 62mm filter thread where photographer can use screw-in filters with ease. It is also currently the world’s widest rectilinear lens with a front filter thread for full frame mirrorless cameras.

1) Ultra-Wide Angleperspective with 126° angle of view
Featuring a remarkable 126° angle of view (AoV), the new Laowa 11mm f/4.5 FF RL offers an exaggerated and non-fisheye perspective. It is a perfect tool for landscape, travel and interior photographers.

2) Built-in 62mm filter thread
Laowa 11mm f/4.5 FF RL is equipped with 62mm filter thread for screw-in filters. It is a very convenient feature for landscape photographers as filters are one of their most commonly used tools. For photographers who opt to use slide-in filters, the specially designed magnetic filter holder allows them to use their 100mm-wide filters with no vignetting.

3) High quality image with minimum distortion and chromatic aberrations
The 11mm lens is composed of 14 elements in 10 groups which deliver a remarkable image sharpness. Although it is not a Zero-D lens , the 2 aspherical elements and 3 extra-low dispersion elements suppress the distortion and chromatic aberrations to the minimum.

4) Super compact and light weight
The lens is designed to achieve high mobility, compactness and lightness to give photographers more flexibility in travelling. The tiny lens is only 6.3cm (2.5inch) in height & weight 254g (8.9oz). It is one of the smallest ultra wide angle lens you could find for full frame mirrorless cameras.

5) Extremely close focusing distance
Laowa 11mm f/4.5 FF RL features an extremely close focusing distance of 7.4′′ / 19cm (from subject to sensor) for photographers to create macro-like shots with the ultra- wide perspective.

6) Stunning 10-point sun stars
Laowa 11mm f/4.5 FF RL is designed with 5-bladed aperture where a clean and appealing 10-point sunstar rendering can be created.

7) Lens Design
Laowa 11mm f/4.5 FF RL supports rangefinder coupling on Leica M. For other mounts, there is a focusing tab to improve stability when focusing and use to adjust the focus ring marking.

8) Multiple mount options
Laowa 11mm f/4.5 FF RL is available in Leica M, Leica L, Sony FE and Nikon Z mounts . 2 different colours (black and silver) are offered for Leica M mount. (The silver version of M mount will be available in late September)
