Atomos NINJA V: AtomOS 10.67.1 Released

Atmos released AtomOS 10.67.1 for the Ninja and you can Download it Here. Below are the changes:

New features
Sony FX9 (PXW-FX9), Sony FX6 (ILME-FX6V), FujiFilm GFX100 and FujiFilm GFX100S RAW Recording metadata:
• WB and ISO metadata support for FCP settings slider adjustments Fixes

Fixes
• Resolved an issue where H.265 recordings on some inputs were interrupted after a momentary loss of video input lock, resulting in segregated files.
• Fixed an issue where the unit would not recommence recording if the Ninja dropped and regained video input lock while recording H.265

Known Limitations
• Recording 4K inputs at 59.94/60p with H.265 is currently only supported in HQ modes. LQ and MQ will be made available in a future firmware release. To use MQ or LQ modes, please change the resolution and frame rate to 4Kp50 or below.

The following video signals from the DC-GH5S are unsupported on the Ninja V for ProRes, DNx and H.265 modes:
• C4K 8bit 150M 60p,
• C4K 8bit 150M 50p,
• 4K 8bit 150M 50p.

These will be supported in a future firmware update. To work around this please select a 10-bit video mode on the camera instead.

• In some cases, the Ninja V may not lock to a RAW video signal from the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III for ProRes RAW, when the Ninja V is switched between playback and record modes.
• Ninja V may not recommence recording automatically when momentarily losing video signal lock from the Sony Alpha 7SIII or Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III due to a faulty cable connection.
• Non-RAW Dual Link SDI video cannot be monitored when in ProRes RAW mode. To monitor and record Dual Link SDI modes please use either ProRes or DNx modes.
• In some cases, dual link video from the Panasonic Varicam LT may not lock when switching from single link video mode. Please reboot the Ninja V if this occurs.

Optical Limits: Samyang 85mm f/1.4 AF – A True Value King

Samyang 85mm f/1.4 AF: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

Optical limits posted its full review of the Samyang 85mm f/1.4 AF and the lens is a great value. You can read the full review here or read the summary below:

The Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 FE has been substantially improved compared to the older DSLR variant. The resolution is still not impressive at f/1.4 but fit-for-purpose if you intend to use it for portraits. You just may not want ultra-sharp results in this case. …The quality is already very high at f/2 and downright great at medium aperture settings. Image distortions are a non-issue even in RAW files. Typical for such lenses, the vignetting is a bit on the high side at f/1.4 but most users will probably rely on auto-correction which reduces the light falloff to an acceptable level. From f/2 there isn’t anything to worry about here. Lateral CAs are low. The same can’t be said about axial CAs (LoCAs) which can be very pronounced in certain scenes. Axial CAs are very difficult to remove in post-processing. The quality of the bokeh is pretty good overall. The general quality of the out-of-focus blur is pretty silky, especially in the critical background. Out-of-focus highlights are very nicely rendered in the image center but the circular shape is falling apart rather rapidly beyond.

In terms of build quality, it is the best Samyang lens that we tested to date – the metal body feels very sturdy and Samyang implemented some degree of weather sealing. An internal focusing mechanism is also maintaining a constant lenght throughout the focus range. The AF is not the fastest around though. It has to shift quite some weight due to the heavy glass elements but there’s room for improvement here. The rather noisy aperture mechanism isn’t ideal either.

The few weaknesses have to be balanced with the price tag of the lens and the Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 FE is hard to beat in this respect – a true value king.

Optical Limits: Tamron 20mm and 24mm Reviewed

Optical limits previously reviewed the Tamron 35mm which you can read about it here. You can also read the full 20mm review here and the 24mm review here, or you can see the summary below:

Tamron 20mm F/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2
The Tamron 20mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 is a bit of a complicated being. Obviously, it’s not meant to be used without image auto-correction. Especially the massive (unusable) barrel distortion requires countermeasures. With all corrections in place, the center performance of the lens is just outstanding but there’s a sharp drop in resolution towards the outer image field at f/2.8. The quality of the outer image field improves when stopping down and is decent albeit unimpressive at medium aperture settings. Lateral CAs are low. There is some vignetting at f/2.8 even with auto-correction …well-controlled when stopped down. The quality of the bokeh is good for an ultra-wide lens.

…we aren’t all that thrilled by the build quality. The rather mediocre plastics and sluggish AF don’t scream quality. …this has to be seen relative to the low price tag. Keeping this in mind, it’s almost surprising that the lens features some degree of sealing against moisture as well as an impressive close focus capability with an object magnification ratio of up to 1:2.

Overall, the Tamron 20mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 is a good lens for a great price but it’s not an obvious choice.

Tamron 24mm F/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2
The Tamron 24mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 stays a bit short of the optical quality that we have seen from the Tamron 35mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 but it’s still a very sharp lens. The center quality is absolutely superb. The outer image field shows no weakness even at f/2.8 but it stays short of exciting results even when stopped down. However, there’s a caveat. Image auto-correction does reduce the corner quality due to a rather excessive amount of barrel distortion. …While you will see somewhat softer corners, the lens has still enough potential for maintaining a good quality in the outer image field though. CAs are quite low and usually not an issue even in RAW images. The vignetting is heavy at large apertures unless you activate image auto-correction. …you can achieve a decent amount of object separation at close focus distances. The rendering of out-of-focus highlights is decent for a moderate ultra-wide prime lens.

The build quality has to be seen in the context of the price tag. Obviously, it is a consumer-grade lens so don’t expect wonders in this respect. The use of plastics is perfectly fine but they have a rather mediocre feel to them. The rather sluggish AF doesn’t help with the subjective quality perception. On the positive side, the lens features some degree of sealing against moisture. Macro photographers will also appreciate the close focus capabilities with an object magnification of up to 1:2.

While the Tamron 24mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 is a decent lens, it still feels like an answer to a question that nobody has asked. Most standard zoom lenses cover the 24mm setting and the speed and quality advantage of the Tamron lens is either marginal or non-existent. But … it’s cheap.
