DPR: Sony a7IV Review

Sony a7IV: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

The Sony a7IV is an interesting step up over the a7III and it comes with a price increase, but it looks like the price is worth every penny. You can read DRP’s full review here or check out the pro/con excerpt below:

Things we likeThings we don’t
  • Good image quality in both stills and video
  • Simple, powerful AF system
  • Decent dynamic range gives flexible Raw files
  • 10-bit video delivers useful processing flexibility
  • Improved ergonomics
  • Extensive customization
  • USB-PD support for charging or operation
  • Eye detection seems less accurate than previous cameras
  • Rear screen is fairly low resolution
  • Video stabilization struggles with intentional camera movement
  • Burst rate drops from 10fps to 6fps if you want full-DR Raw
  • Some options and settings are needlessly complex

Sony Removes A-Mount Lenses From Website

Sony A-Mount arguably died the day E-mount was announced but it hung on until 2016 when the Sony a99II was released. This gave some hope that Sony would continue releasing flagship bodies into the future to support A-mount shooters and even Sony insisted in 2017 that A-mount wasn’t dead yet, but with the only new A-mount body being listed as discontinued in 2021 things seemed over for A-mount.

Now kunkoku has noticed that Sony discontinued all A-mount lenses on the sony store. It seems new lenses were being produced up until recently or maybe Sony just sold out what was left of existing stock, but now there should be no doubts that A-mount is dead. I just wish Sony wouldn’t have been so insistent in the past that they would continue A-mount development. Kunkoku speculates that the discontinuation might be due to COVID-19, but we all knew this was coming since we haven’t heard a peep about A-mount for quite a few years now. That being said it looks like used bodies and lenses are rising in price due to scarcity at B&H Photo.
