SAB: Samyang AF 135mm f/1.8 FE – Review Excellent at a Very Reasonable Price

Samyang AF 135mm f/1.8 FE:
B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

Sony Alpha Blog posted its Samyang AF 135mm f/1.8 FE review and called it an “Excellent lens at a very reasonable price. SAB even claims it is a little better than the Sony FE 135mm f1.8 GM. Below are some excerpts from the review and you can read the full review here.

  • The Sony has a little edge in term of Bokeh ball when aperture is closed down but it is not a big difference.
  • The Sony does better for sports for people, objects in fast motion as the Samyang can loose track of the subject more easily than the Sony. The Samyang is also limited to 8fps whereas the Sony can reach up to 30 fps with Sony A1
  • The rendering of the Sony GM is also more gentle and subtle for skin tones with a little bit less micro contrast , the Samyang is a bit more punchy/crispy in term of rendering. On this criteria it is a matter of personal taste

Highly recommend

  • Outstanding sharpness on the entire frame as of F1.8
  • Excellent contrast
  • Very Good AF for static subject or linear movements
  • Smooth background blur
  • Excellent color rendition
  • Very good Bokeh balls
  • Focusing ring that can become Clickless aperture ring
  • Very good ergonomics
  • Reasonnable price (950 euros)
  • Light (can even be used on gimbal)
  • Very Good build quality
  • Moderate vignetting
  • Very good min focusing distance
  • Very good resistance to flare
  • Very low CA
  • Low distortion

Average

  • Size (but in line with other 135mm F1.8)
  • A little bit too sharp & contrasty for portraits for the taste of some people
  • Drains battery fast
  • Bokeh balls as of F4 no more circular
  • AF limited yo 8fps (only Sony can reach 20/30 fps)

Cons

  • AF in burst mode (for sports) not as efficient as the Sony GM for subjects changing directions

The open F value is 1.4, which is extremely bright, and it is also useful for shooting indoors or in dimly lit places such as in the evening. In addition, it can be used for a wide range of expressions such as portraits with a greatly blurred background by taking advantage of the shallow depth of field. A circular aperture with 13 aperture blades is used, so you can enjoy the beautiful circular bokeh. The lens body is a highly durable and luxurious finish that incorporates eight lenses including high-refractive glass in an all-metal housing. The aperture ring is clickless, so please use it not only for still shooting but also for video shooting.”

ePhotozine: Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II – Review

Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II SEL70200GM2:
B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

When the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS first launched there was a lot of discussion about whether it was worth the price or not that most likely came from inconsistent production quality since there were also very positive reviews. Now the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II has hit the market and it seems to be an excellent performing lens with minimal cons. ePhotozine just published its full review which you can read here or check out the excerpt below.

As cameras have become more and more demanding, needing sharper and sharper optics, so lenses have become better and better. There can be no better example than this new Sony lens – faster, lighter, more compact and with higher performance than what was already a really excellent lens.

Pros

  • Superb sharpness
  • Low CA
  • Low distortion
  • Low flare
  • Low vignetting
  • Fast, accurate and quiet AF
  • Smooth bokeh
  • Dust and moisture sealing
  • Light and compact for its specification
  • Excellent ergonomics

Cons

  • High, but fair, price

CP+ 2022 Tamron Announcements

Tamron released a CP+ 2022 video that you can view below, but it mainly relates to current products on the market, but dclife points out some interesting details. To start with Tamron is expected to release 5 lenses this year, but 3 of them are for X-mount with 2 of those being on E-mount already (Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 DI III-A RXD and Tamron 17-70mm f/ 2.8 Di III-A VC RXD. The third lens will likely be for E and X mount, but we do not know what it is at this time. DCLife also provided a translation from the video stating:

Tamron will continue to listen to the voices of our customers and develop unique lenses that are unique to Tamron. And I would like to incorporate customization functions into all models of future lenses, improving optical performance, further maximizing AF speed, improving operability of zoom ring and focus ring, texture and grip. We would like to make further improvements such as improving the feeling.

In particular, “TAMRON Lens Utility” is still a developing technology, so we would like to hear your voices and requests and add it to new functions.

In addition to improving optical performance and AF performance, future models will be equipped with a lens customization function for all lenses. We are waiting for your requests for lenses and customization functions.

So it seems Tamron is going to make future lenses programable/customizable, which will be a nice value-added feature. I am sure more mirrorless lens manufacturers will follow in the future as lenses become more digital and integrated with the camera, but Tamron is off to a good start.
