Interview: Sony Declares “Professional Market Strategy” For Mirrorless Cameras

Sony has been granting a lot of interviews lately to fully explain their roadmap going forward and the latest with DC.Watch gives us a few new details, which I have highlighted below.

  • Digital camera, interchangeable lens, digital video camera, broadcasting station, cinema solution, broadcasting equipment, network camera, medical business unit, Felica business etc… began operating separately from Sony Corporation in April this year.
  • Mirrorless cameras are showing growth in 2017 with the still camera business projecting to contract all over the world.
  • Sony’s domestic share of full-size body reached approximately 29% (the first half of 2017).
  • The Sony a7RIII has exceeded preorder expectations and is expected to become the center of business in the second half of 2017.
  • Sony is focused on growing their professional market, which is hard to grow, but it will trickle down to consumers, which are still important to Sony.
  • Sony releases about 5 lenses a year.
  • Sony is following professionals around to design their cameras and pro service to be better tailored than competitors. This will take time, but they have made progress since 2014, when they started.
  • Professional and consumer cameras aren’t all that different anymore
  • The Sony’s CineAltaVENICE sensor is based on a still camera sensor.
  • Eleven years have passed since Sony’s α came out.
  • The Toyko Olympics could be an opportunity to show off.
  • Mr. Ishizuka’s current favorite machine is RX10 IV

Sony a7RIII Help Guide Now Available

The Sony Help Guide for the Sony a7RIII is now available in addition to the user manual. Looking at these guides it seems like Sony hasn’t done much to improve the Sony a9 menu layout. Hopefully, the changes that have been made to the button layout feel logical and allow me to avoid diving into Sony’s crazy menus much. I am looking forward to seeing what the a7RIII can do but also worried that it might leave me feeling frustrated after a long day of shooting. Sony will nail their menus and controls one of these days.

Did Sony Kill The Sony a9 With The Sony a7RIII?

The release of the Sony a7RIII has some Sony a9 users looking for more, but it’s unlikely Sony will deliver. In a recent interview, Sony stated that they would rather dedicate resources towards new camera development than doing big firmware updates, but with Sony delivering two distinct lines of professional cameras they should seriously reconsider this policy so that flagship cameras remain flagship. Fujifilm has successfully updated their expansive line of cameras pretty dramatically at times and their users love them for it.

While I do not believe the Sony a7RIII will kill the Sony a9, I think it will prevent users that do not need the a9 from overspending on a camera that is entirely too fast for most photographers. The Sony a7RIII is a more well-rounded camera for most photographers and probably a better value, due to its design, but the Sony a9’s buffer depth and shooting speed is simply unmatched and if you are photographing action you can never get enough speed. The Sony a9 is a well-rounded camera, but it’s really at home with moving subjects, while the Sony a7RIII is far better for studio work.

Sony a7RIII Manual Online Now

The Sony a7RIII Manual is now available for download here. I personally can’t wait to receive mine and compare it to my GFX. We will also be comparing the a7RIII to the Nikon D850, which I have access to thanks to Nikonrumors. The Sony a9 was a bit much for me speed wise and I have been waiting quite a while for this upgrade to come along. It shouldn’t disappoint.

Sony a6000 With 16-50mm and 55-210mm Discounted $450

The Sony a6000 is currently discounted with the 16-50mm and 55-210mm on Amazon. This is a good starter kit or gift for people looking to give Sony cameras a try. Some even find the a6000 to be better than significantly higher-end DSLR cameras, but Sony has other cameras like the a6500 and a7/a9 series designed to compete with them.
