First Look Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS

The Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS is at CP+ and Sony even did a presentation where a photographer gave some input on the new 400mm’s performance.

“”It’s very light” is my first observation. Very very very light, which is very important. Sharpness is Brilliant. Bokeh is Excelent. Really lovely. Image quality and AF performance even when using a teleconverter is really outstanding.”

The Sony FE 400 f/2.8 was first seen at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and this is the first good look we have had of it since. The lens will ship in September according to B&H Photo.

Sony a7III Preorders Starting Already in US

The Sony a7III certainly shook up the camera world when it was announced a few days ago, but how well will it sell compared to its counterparts and will it deprive others of sales? Those that have used the Sony a9 can verify that it is a pretty amazing camera and I personally believe it is irresponsibly fast with the a7RIII being more my speed. This should Put the a7III in a unique spot providing users with just enough speed and an AF system that is still unmatched by anyone at this time.

Love/Like/Hate/Despise Sony cameras. We should all be thankful that they are disrupting the market and forcing companies like Canon and Nikon to do something.

Sony a7III vs Canon 6D Mark II vs Nikon D750 by The Specs

Sony isn’t the only company with an entry level full frame camera. The Sony a7III compares rather well to the Canon 6D Mark II and Nikon D750 and will likely lead to many switchers because Sony isn’t holding back their technology. The Sony a7III could cannibalize some a9 sales since the AF performance is equivalent to the Sony a9 and it could even lead to the early release of a Sony a9II.

Generally speaking, Sony has a tendency of refreshing their first generation cameras quickly, so this little budget a9 that they are calling the a7III could be a sign that Sony plans to refresh the a9 soon. It would be great if this refresh came in the form of a massive firmware update similar to how Fujifilm does things, but I think they will release the Sony a9II if Sony a9 sales slow down substantially. You can see some of the a7III AF performance on our live blog here.

CameraSize.com included the Sony a7III in their database last night so all of these photos are accurately sized. Canon and Nikon will have to do a lot better if they want to compete with the new Sony a7III, which could fairly be compared with much higher end cameras like the Canon 5D Mark IV, but for now, this is how they stack up.

Sony a7III The Not So Basic, Basic Camera

It seems that everyone agrees… Sony far exceeded everyone’s expectations for an entry level full frame camera for $2,000. Canon and Nikon should be very worried about the Sony a7III because on the specs alone Sony’s entry-level camera can beat almost every single full frame camera in their lineups, but Sony still has a user experience problem. I have been covering the various live streams out there all night and they are full of Photographers hanging up their Canon 5D Mark IV’s and Nikon D750’s, for Sony’s new a9 light.

The Sony a7III is going to disrupt the photography market the way the Sony a7RII did when it was released causing everyone else to play catch up and how are Canon and Nikon going to release their first full frame cameras anywhere near this level of performance? 2018 might be a bloodbath and it could even reach down to high-end APS-C cameras like the Fujifilm X-H1 if you don’t fully understand or need the video advantages it offers. The release of the Sony a7III might even speed up the release of cameras like the Fujifilm X-T3. 2018 is definitely going to be the best year yet for photographers and we are just getting started. Stay tuned and check out the live blog from yesterday for more coverage.

SIGMA Launches Nine Interchangeable Art Prime Lenses For Sony E-mount Cameras With Full-Frame Sensors

SIGMA launches seven interchangeable Art prime lenses for Sony E-mount cameras with full-frame sensors
SIGMA Corporation is pleased to announce the upcoming launch of interchangeable lenses for the Sony E-mount digital camera series with full-frame image sensors. SIGMA will gradually introduce the lenses as members of the Art line, which offers photographers the highest level of optical performance.

While offering the same high-performance optical design as other lenses in the Art line, the new Sony E-mount models will feature a newly developed control algorithm that optimizes the autofocus drive and maximizes the data transmission speed. In addition, these lenses will be compatible with Sony’s Continuous AF (AF-C) and high-speed autofocus, which are not addressed by SIGMA MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11. Like the converter MC-11, the lenses will be compatible with in-camera image stabilization and in-camera lens aberration correction, which includes corrections for peripheral illumination, chromatic aberrations, and distortion.

The lineup will include the Art line set of seven prime lenses covering 14mm to 135mm. It will also include two models that SIGMA will be exhibiting at CP+ 2018: 70mm F2.8 DG MACRO | Art and 105mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art (launch date TBD). Further, SIGMA plans to introduce additional Sony E-mount models in the Art line going forward.

Note: This product is developed, manufactured and sold based on the specifications of E-mount which was disclosed by Sony Corporation under the license agreement with Sony Corporation. Read More »
