Sony Adds New Enhancements To VENICE Camera

At the CineGearExpo in Los Angeles, Sony has announced new enhancements for the VENICE camera system. See below for full press release:

Sony is announcing new updates and developments for its VENICE CineAlta motion picture camera system including version 2 firmware, which has been advanced and will now be available in the beginning of July 2018.

Sony is announcing the development of its new VENICE Extension System designed for expanded flexibility and enhanced ergonomics. Also being announced is Sony’s plan for high frame rate support for the Venice system.

“Venice was born from the voice of cinematographers,” said Peter Crithary, marketing manager for motion picture cameras, Sony Electronics. “Their voices continue to fuel the ongoing development of this powerful camera with the mission to make a real difference in their daily work. These new enhancements provide professionals more freedom to hone their craft, and also protects their investment.” Read More »

Additional Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD Coverage

The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD is a very popular lens right now and even with the current AF issue a compelling purchase. Tamron easily could have sold this lens for $1,000 or even $1,200. I hope they work out the firmware issues for this lens soon because I want to pick up a copy myself and there is a big backlog of orders at this time. I think it will pair well with any of the Sony a7 cameras.

Kamlan 28mm f/1.4 Coming to Kickstarter and Future Roadmap

Sainsonic is launching a new lens on Kickstarter the Kamlan 28mm f/1.4, but they also have a roadmap for some future lenses of interest in addition to their already broad range of Kamlan and Zonlai lenses that are available.

Q2 2018
21mm f1.8 APS-C

Q3
50mm f1.1 Mark2

Q4
32mm f1.3 APS-C
15mm f1.8 APS-C

These are some interesting focal lengths and apertures, to say the least, but Machang Optics lenses are relatively affordable so they are a good option for experimentation. Also, cheap Chinese lenses have gotten a lot better in recent years so there is no longer a reason to steer clear of them unless you’re obsessed with perfection.

Sony a7RIII vs. Nikon D850 Underwater Comparison

Nikon Rumors has a lengthy guest post comparing the Nikon D850 vs Sony a7RIII for underwater use and it is very thorough. The Nikon D850 is a huge step up over past Nikon cameras for video and it shows in the above video. I personally prefer the Sony a7RIII and have used both cameras, but they do a very good job of demonstrating the pros and cons of each camera so it’s definitely worth a watch if you’re into underwater photography and cinematography.

DJI Ronin-S Single Handed Stabilizer

The DJI Ronin-S single handed stabilizer is the perfect size and weight for Sony cameras if you are in the market. It’s already been delayed a few times, but it might actually ship soon from your favorite retailer B&H Photo. The Ronin-S is ideal for the Sony a7 series of cameras with G-Master glass and has a motor twice as strong as the DJI Ronin-M. It is also highly programmable so it’s great for one man shoots.
