Sony a7 vs Nikon Z by The Specs: Updated

The specs for the Nikon Z are very impressive at this time, but we are still waiting on a few more details. Sony should answer soon with their a7SIII and maybe even a9 cameras. Personally, I would really like to see them announce the Sony a9R and a9S along with a Sony a9II before Nikon can ship their cameras, but that would certainly be a surprising move at this point. It will also be interesting to see if the European pricing difference holds and if Nikon is able to command a 500 pound premium over Sony. Sony might even drop their prices some to keep Nikon from switching anyone and to make the new cameras less attractive.

The Nikon Z is a promising start, but if these specs hold as their top of the line mirrorless cameras over the next 4 years than Sony will leave them behind quickly. I hope Nikon does really well with the Z, but I’m not sure if it is enough to switch people that weren’t already loyal to Nikon, especially since they do not have a full system to fall back on yet.

Sony Market Share By Percentage 1H 2018 Analysis

Sony Market Share By Percentage 1H 2018

BrandU.S. Dollar Share
Sony40%
Canon33%
Nikon26%

Source: The NPD Group, Inc., U.S. Retail Tracking Service, Detachable Lens Camera, Sensor Size: Full Frame, Based on Dollars Share, Jan.- Jun. 2018.

SonyMirrorlessPro received a more detailed report of about where Sony stands compared to Canon and Nikon and full frame cameras it’s not looking good for the legacy brands. How much market share Sony currently holds is largely debated by Canon/Nikon fanboys and with both companies going mirrorless soon no one should be surprised about how over the top the rhetoric is becoming.

Further complicating the launch of Canon/Nikon mirrorless cameras I have heard whispers that these cameras won’t be D850/D5 killers like the Sony a7RIII and Sony a9. If that’s the case Canon/Nikon will have a hard time pulling photographers away from Sony. Nikon/Canon can’t stick to their traditional release schedule if they want to take on Sony. Read More »

Sony RX1 Replacement Teased by Zeiss?

The Zeiss China Weixin account has a teaser that looks like a new camera. As Photorumors points out the rumors of a Zeiss camera aren’t new, but this is the first time we have seen compelling evidence that it is coming.

The text says something like:

“For those who understand our tradition, they understand our tough quality requirements. You should be aware that how much experience and technology we put into each lens.

For that, Zeiss wins the trust of millions of photographers worldwide.

As it turns out, the photography world and us still miss something.

It’s time for more Zeiss.
It’s time to welcome a new milestone of Zeiss photography.

Text after the poster:

Mystery veil will be open soon
Before that
Can you guess what is the BRAND NEW PRODUCT based on the picture?
Tell us what you guess
We will choose ten people who respond correctly in random on September 27
And send you a small gift
Let’s imagine together”

If it is a camera body than it’s most likely an RX1 replacement, but it could be a new rangefinder style digital camera too with an M-mount. Either way, it’s highly likely that Sony played a big part in designing this camera and if it is an RX1 replacement it might make the price easier to accept. What do you think?
