Nikon Wants To Challenge The Sony a9

Nikon Rumors is reporting that Nikon has expressed interest in challenging the Sony a9 with a new mirrorless camera that is equivalent to the D5. This is likely why Sony will refresh the Sony a9 sooner rather than later with an even more impressive Sony a9II. I highly doubt that Nikon will manage to match the crazy performance of the Sony a9 since they haven’t managed to catch the a7 yet, but surprises do happen. It will be interesting to see if Canon follows soon with an announcement of their own.

The announcement of the Sony 600mm f/4 GM and 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 should have Nikon and Canon worried since they currently do not have a body that matches the Sony a9. Using a Sony a9 is unlike shooting any other camera with its completely black out free EVF and crazy sticky AF that can shoot at 20fps. The competition better look out now that Sony has some serious long glass coming otherwise Sony might end up becoming the new Canon in a similar fashion to how Canon beat out Nikon so many years ago.

Sony vs Fujifilm Color Science Comparison

Max Yuryev compared Sony and Fujifilm’s latest color science using the Sony a6400 and Fujifilm X-T30 with some A/B comparisons which I have clipped from the video below. Make your own picks and see which camera you really prefer in the video above. It’s interesting how Sony’s tendency to tint the image can be of benefit or detriment depending on the scene.

Round Up: Sony 600mm f/4 GM and 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 Coverage

Above is probably the best summary of the war between Sony, Nikon, and Canon. The Sony 600mm f/4 GM and 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 have really rounded out Sony’s mirrorless system and there really isn’t a good argument for Nikon or Canon technological dominance anymore.

My friend that runs our sister sites has always commented on Sony’s lack of long glass whenever I compared Sony to Canon/Nikon and the minute I leaked Sony’s 200-600mm and asked him if it would satisfy him he said he would rather have Nikon’s 600mm f/4. Well now Sony has a 600mm f/4 that likely dominates the competition with its superior G Master design so now what will it take?

Sony is dominating this generation of cameras and Nikon/Canon are too far behind to catch up without obscene amounts of investment. Sony has spent billions of dollars year over year on mirrorless R&D since entering the mirrorless market while Canon and Nikon have spent conservatively to secure in their market place position. It is unlikely either will catch Sony soon with their mirrorless camera system, which should help Sony win the war to come.

Should Sony’s Sensor Business Spin Off?

Activist investor Daniel Loeb is calling for Sony to spin off their sensor business and he even set up a website astrongersony. The 102-page presentation and 7-page letter is interesting and I will likely read it all, but does anyone agree with him? Activist investors have been getting too much attention in recent history, which has lead to a lot of undeserved power imo.

Financial Times (behind a paywall) just published an article entitled “Daniel Loeb calls on Sony to sell sensors business.” Loeb’s Third Point, in a letter to investors today, according to the FT, publicly acknowledged it had built up a USD$1.5B stake in Sony. Loeb is apparently calling for Sony to hive off its sensors business, listing it in Japan as a separate company. Apparently, Loeb has set up a website laying out his thesis. Sony and Loeb previously tangled back in ’13.

Sony’s Engineering Prowess Proven by Fujifilm Value Angle Calculation and Misinformation Being Spread Again

Profifoto and Docma have tried to run with Fujifilm’s value angle figure using the following formula:

Value Angle = 2 × arctan ((2 × Pad Ratio) / (Port Diameter – Sensor Diagonal))

But they got something wrong because their figures do not match Fujifilm’s calculation table.

Their table did help use decode Fujifilm’s original table over on FujiAddict thought, which shows that the Sony NEX has a great value angle, while the Sony FE system has a very bad one at 5.50. If these values are evident of a manufactures ability to deliver image quality then Sony must have some amazing engineer.

This way of calculating the quality of a mount could be of significance from an engineering perspective, but it really shouldn’t matter to photographers, beyond the possibility that engineering challenges can lead to higher prices. Sony has been very open about using software to fix optical weaknesses in their cheaper lenses and they probably do so in some of there GM glass, but GM glass pushes the limits of optics so it is probably incredibly difficult to make with such a low value angle as measured by Fujifilm.

To summarize I do not believe any of these numbers should matter to photographers, but it might make engineers lives easier when trying to design extreme lenses with maximum image quality. If Sony had a better value angle their GM glass might be cheaper or more profitable, but most entry-level cameras and lenses have been sufficient for most photographers needs for years now. We should take manufactures numbers with a grain of salt because everyone is doing their own thing and right now Sony is leading the way with features like their eye AF.
