Sony Announces Firmware Update For The RX0 II Compact Camera

Sony has announced a free firmware update for the RX0 II. The update will allow users to easily utilize its high-quality video and audio for livestreaming by simply connecting the camera directly to a PC1 or a Sony Xperia™ smartphone2.

Like the firmware update for the Sony ZV-1 in February, this update for the RX0 II will support UVC/UAC3. Users can easily connect the RX0 II to a PC or a Sony Xperia via USB cable4 to utilize the high-quality video stream and built-in microphone for crystal-clear audio for everyday uses from livestreaming via social media platforms to video conferencing.

This firmware update is available now and can be downloaded below:

––––––––––––––––

1) Windows10, Windows8.1/macOS 10.13-10.15, macOS 11.0 (except Apple silicon macs) /Android.

2) Using an Xperia 1 II or Xperia 5 II upgraded to Android™ 11. Update availability varies by region (as of April 2021).

3) UVC is a standard for communicating mainly with USB video cameras and web cameras that allows the transfer of motion-JPEG and YUV (uncompressed) data. UAC is a standard for the transfer of audio from digital sound sources. Its specifications comply with the USB standard, letting you listen to the sound source on the connected device without the need for drivers.

4) Micro USB Type-B.

DPRTV: Sony FX3 and Sony a7SIII Compared

DPRTV posted an interesting video comparing the Sony FX3 and Sony a7SIII. You can watch the full video above or read the key points below:

  • The FX3 is part of the cinema family but the menus come from Sony consumer cameras
  • The FX3 has no EVF so you have to compose with its 1.44m dot fully articulating screen
  • The Sony a7SIII has a very nice new EVF that you can use
  • FX3 rear screen doesn’t get bright enough for direct sunlight
  • FX3 has a dim tally light on the front and a bright one on the back
  • FX3 ergonomics have been designed for waist-level shooting
  • Lots of record buttons on the FX3, but Jordon prefers to use the shutter button
  • There is a zoom toggle where the power switch used to be
  • The power switch is on the opposite side of the camera now and Jordon hates it
  • The body is covered in 5 quarter 20 mounts so you can stick it in a cage or just attach stuff to the camera all over
  • There is an included XLR adapter with a nice top handle
  • The FX3 audio adapter has 4 audio channels
  • Channels 3 & 4 are tied together as the two stereo channels from the 3.5mm input
  • The consumer menus are better laid out than the cinema series menus, but the menus lack some useful features like shutter angle and wave forums
  • It would be nice if you could set up your settings with the touch screen
  • FX3 footage looks exactly the same as a7SIII footage
  • S-Cinetone is great, but the a7SIII has that now via a firmware update
  • Video quality is pretty close to cameras that have over-sampled images
  • Sony applies a lot of noise reduction to video, but if you use an external recorder you can pick how much to apply
  • Prores RAW doesn’t currently work in DaVinci resolve
  • The FX6 doesn’t offer a big step up in image quality but it does allow you to control noise reduction and the ability to record cinema 4k
  • The big advantage of the FX3 over the a7SIII is the built-in fan which will help you to shoot longer in hotter environments
  • The a7SIII is best for run and gun portability
  • Jordan wishes they let people know the FX3 was coming when the a7SIII was announced
  • Jordan would pick the a7SIII over the FX3 because he likes to use the viewfinder

New Sony Camera Registered Overseas

Sony registered a new camera overseas WW734234. The WW734234 and WW356015 can’t be identified at the moment but one is likely a Sony a7IV.

Sony’s “WW734234” has been registered with an overseas certification body. Equipped with Wi-Fi (5GHz / 2.4GHz) and Bluetooth. The ILCE-7RM4A announced the other day is “WW447485” and “WW778752”, and the ILCE-7RM3A is “WW186333”, so the unannounced “WW356015” (Wi-Fi [2.4GHz] / Bluetooth) and 2 models have been registered this time.

Sigma 35mm F/1.4 DG DN Art Listed Early

Sigma 35mm F/1.4 DG DN Art: B&H Photo / Amazon
A classic has been reinvented with the SIGMA 35mm F / 1.4 DG DN Art. With excellent optical performance, fast and silent autofocus and professional features, this prime lens is a valuable addition to any photographer.

This 35mm lens is part of Sigma’s Art line. In fact, the high-end product line started in 2012 with this lens’ predecessor: the 35mm F / 1.4 DG HSM Art. The new version has been completely redesigned for today’s system cameras. It is smaller and lighter, so that the camera and lens are perfectly balanced.

You can enjoy exceptional sharpness from corner to corner and at all apertures. Optical aberrations are kept to a minimum by an advanced optical design. The lens contains 15 lens elements in 11 groups, of which two are Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements, one Extraordinary Low Dispersion (ELD) elements, one ‘F’ Low Dispersion (FLD) elements and two aspherical lens elements. The bokeh is beautifully soft and attractive with 11 rounded aperture blades. The lens is very bright with F / 1.4, yet sagital coma flare wide-open is very well controlled and bright points of light to the edge of the image are prevented. The 35mm lens also performs very well in backlighting because a lot of attention has been paid to reducing flare and ghosting. Read More »

DPR: Sony Alpha 1 Review – One Camera to Rule Them All

DPR posted its review of the Sony a1 and you can read the full review here or see a summary of their findings below:

So, have they done it? Have the engineers at Sony, in making the Alpha 1, created a single camera model that could fulfill the needs of just about any professional photographer?

We’d say so.

What we likeWhat we don’t
  • Excellent image quality with high resolution and good dynamic range
  • Good range of 8K and 4K video modes with great quality and feature set
  • Fast electronic shutter provides silent shooting with no IQ compromises
  • Truly excellent autofocus performance
  • Big, high-res electronic viewfinder
  • Solid ergonomics; good balance of external controls and compact size
  • Excellent menus and responsive touchscreen interface
  • Highly customizable separation of stills and video settings
  • Dual UHS-II SD, CFexpress Type A slots
  • Lossless compressed Raw capture at up to 20fps shooting
  • 1/400 flash sync with mechanical shutter; 1/200 with e-shutter
  • Extensive wired and wireless connectivity options for pros and non-pros alike
  • HEIF (and HLG) shooting for realistic HDR imagery on compatible displays
  • Rear screen a bit small, low-res against similarly priced competitors
  • 30fps bursts only available in JPEG/HEIF/lossy compressed Raw
  • 30fps bursts are lens-dependent
  • High-res shot modes require desktop software to combine images; no motion correction yet available
  • EVF drops in resolution during C-AF, or if you choose high FPS modes
  • Users must manually select between human, animal or birds for Eye AF
  • Battery life is just okay compared to other flagships
