New Profoto Connect Pro For Sony

Profoto announced a new Connect Pro for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Leica, and Fujifilm cameras. The new Profoto Connect Pro is marketed as being more than just a remote trigger – “it’s the central nervous system of the shoot – because everything flows through it“.

Press release:
Profoto Connect Pro – Trigger ultimate connectivity
When you’re on set, shooting off-camera with multiple lights, you need more than just a reliable trigger – you need complete control. It’s why we created the Profoto Connect Pro; it’s more than a remote – it’s the central nervous system of the shoot – because everything flows through it.

The Profoto Connect Pro is remarkably easy to use. Forget the user manual; the large display is intuitive and straightforward, with improved TTL group control. Simply slide it on your camera’s hot-shoe – and you’re ready to create great images.

Yes, in the first instance, it connects your camera with multiple flashes – but beyond that, it allows instant and complete control of each individual flash setting from your shooting position so you can finesse and fine-tune at will.

This ‘over abundance’ of control is thanks to Profoto’s awarded AirX connectivity, which allows you to tailor your workflow to whatever shooting situation you find yourself in.

You can also choose where you receive the information because the group controls on the Connect Pro are easily mirrored in the Profoto Control app on your iPad, iPhone, or Android smartphone. And with up to 100 available channels, there will always be a free channel for your lighting setup, even in the largest commercial studios.

Add to that improved battery life and seamless firmware updates via Profoto AirX, and you have a remote that takes connectivity to new heights.

“Our overarching mission is to make access to great light easy for all professional photographers. And with the introduction of Connect Pro, we take yet another step towards accomplishing our mission,” says Marko Pirc, Product Manager at Profoto.
“The Connect Pro and AirX will be at the very heart of the Profoto system, the keys to the kingdom, so to speak. And our plans for the system don’t stop here. We have great plans for it to grow and develop for years to come.”

Of course, with the Connect Pro, you’ll benefit from Profoto’s typically impeccable build quality alongside minimal and stylish design. And as you’d expect from a Profoto product, it’s utterly reliable, delivering superior consistency flash after flash – so you’ll never miss a shot.

TechArt LM-EA9 For Leica M Mount Lenses is Being Teased

The TechArt LM-EA7 is one of my favorite AF adapters for M-mount lenses on Sony and it is finally being updated with the TechArt LM-EA9. The TechArt LM-EA7 also went by TechArt Pro, and it was compatible with just about all M-mount lenses. It looks like the TechArt LM-EA9 is a bit more compact, which should help it adapt more M-mount glass.

DXO: Yongnuo FE 85mm f/1.8 DF DSM Review

The Yongnuo FE 85mm f/1.8 DF DSM has been out for a while, but DXO just published a review of the lense and it is super sharp. You can read the full review here or check out the summary below:

…the Yongnuo YN 85mm F1.8 S DF DSM get excellent sharpness at the center of the frame but will have to make some compromises, especially in terms of corner softness and chromatic aberrations. Build quality and materials are also not quite on the same level as the comparison lenses from Sony and Zeiss but essentially the Yongnuo offers a high level of quality at a fraction of the price of its competitors…

PAV: Sony 24-70mm Compared to Sigma 24-70mm and Samyang 24-70mm

Sony has a lot of great 24-70mm options, but which should you pick? The above video tries to figure that out with some of the best new 24-70mm options on the market. Below is a summary of the above video along with all of the options currently available:

  • Sony is over twice the price of the competitors
  • Samyang is the heaviest at 1096g
  • New Sony 24-70mm is very light at 695g while the old lens was 886g and the sigma is 835g
  • The new Sony Mark II is best for walking around or gimbal work
  • Sony Mark II has the most controls and buttons
  • Sony Mark II has a smooth/tight switch that controls the resistance of the zoom which is very nice to have
  • Sony Mark II is the only lens with an aperture ring and it can be clicked or clickless for video
  • Sony Mark I has one assignable button
  • Samyang has an odd design because the only control is for custom mode 1/2, which changes the focus ring at the front from controlling focus to aperture
  • Optical all lenses are quite good with the Sonys shifting colors cooler while the Sigma is warmer and the Samyang shifts warmer and toward greens
  • Sony Mark I is the softest in the center
  • Sony Mark II, Samyang, and Sigma are equally sharp in the center
  • Sony Mark I is the worst in the edge
  • Sony Mark II is beating the Sigma at the edge, but the Samyang is the sharpest and probably explains its weight
  • Samyang is the cheapest
  • Sony Mark II and Sigma have 11 aperture blades while Sony Mark I and Samyang have 9
  • Sony Mark I has nice smooth bokeh while the Sony Mark II has a bit of cutting at the edges, but it is smoother
  • The Sigma and Samyang both have great bokeh, but the Samyang probably wins
  • The Samyang punches well above its price point
  • Sony Mark I and Sigma arent parfocal, but are very good
  • The Samyang and Sony Mark II jump focal points a lot while zooms
  • Breathing is very under control on all 4 lenses
  • AF performance of all 4 are very good even for professionals
  • Sony Mark II has the most sophisticated motor tech so it is the quietest to focus
  • All 4 lenses can track a person fine
  • Both Sony lenses are incredibly fast with the Samyang being very good and the Sigma being a little slower
  • Minimum focuses differ quite a bit with Sony Mark II letting you get the closest
  • You really can’t go wrong with any of these lenses, but the Sony Mark II is the best lens
