Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 Pro Coming in December

The Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 Pro for E-mount was listed on Amazon months ago, but it is now expected to launch in December. The lens has already shipped for X-mount and by all accounts, it is a great lens and it should be great on E-mount too.

OL: Viltrox AF 20mm f/2.8 – Very Good Results With A Flaw

The Viltrox AF 20mm f/2.8 FE is a super affordable ultra-wide lens that is capable of very good results – with a flaw. Technically, it produces very sharp results at relevant aperture settings. However, strong field curvature is an issue at large apertures, so for best results, you should stop down to f/5.6. Whether the field curvature is relevant to you at all depends on the application. It’ll be noticeable if you do astrophotography or city scenes at night if you shoot at f/2.8. For vlogging or typical landscape photography, this isn’t a real issue. The amount of vignetting is very high at f/2.8, but with activated auto-correction, it’s not a big deal from f/4 onward. Image distortions are present but not overly pronounced. They are a bit wavy, though. Lateral CAs are generally nothing to worry about. The quality of the bokeh is decent for a lens in this class.

Despite the low price tag, the build quality is surprisingly high. Unlike in their Pro lenses, they’ve used plastic for the lens body, but it feels pretty good despite the very low weight. Combined with its tiny size, it’s also not a burden in your camera bag. There is no weather sealing, but that’s hardly surprising. The AF is sufficiently fast and silent.

Overall, the Viltrox AF 20mm f/2.8 FE is probably the go-to lens for people who are on a budget. Yes, something like Sony’s own FE 20mm f/1.8 G is better, but it also resides in a very different price sphere.

BCN Lens Sales 2023

BCN posted a breakdown of lens sales and third-party manufacturers have really taken off lately with Sigma leading the way at 18.9% followed by Tamron at 17.8%, while Sony produced 14.5%. Tamron and Sigma make great lenses, but I think Tamron has been more consistent at releasing desirable lenses while Sigma can be hit or miss.

  • Interchangeable lenses are now on sale. According to data compiled by BCN, the only time in the past year that sales were lower than the same month last year was in December last year. The last time the sales amount was lower than the previous year was in October 2020. Furthermore, the average unit price is also on the rise. Sales have been steadily increasing for two years. Currently, both the number of books and the amount of sales continue to increase by almost double digits.
  • In particular, third-party lenses manufactured by manufacturers such as Sigma and Tamron are seeing an increase in their sales share. Currently, third-party manufacturers account for 30% to 40% of all interchangeable lenses sold, and their presence is growing. Even this October, they held first and second place in terms of sales share, beating out the genuine group.
  • Sigma ranks first, with an 18.9% share in sales. Tamron came in second with 17.8%. With a slight gap, the genuine Sony finally came in 3rd place with 14.5%. Nikon came in 4th place with 14.2%, followed by Canon in 5th place with 12.9%.
  • The best-selling lens by lens was Sigma’s 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary (FUJIFILM X).
  • Sony’s E-mount lenses for mirrorless cameras sell the most lenses by mount. As of October, it accounted for 36.6%. Next was Nikon’s Z mount lenses at 14.2%.
  • Sony actively releases mount information. Allows third party participation. Nikon has followed Sony’s lead and gradually begun disclosing mount information, and third parties are also increasingly entering the market. It can be said that the boom in the lens market is largely due to the contribution of these third parties.

The Venus Optics Aurogon FF 10-50x NA0.5 Supermicro APO is a unique lens that was announced a while ago, but it is only just starting to become available from B&H Photo.
