Tamron FY2023 Financial Results – 6 Lenses Coming in 2024

Tamron released its FY2023 financial results and the company continues to do quite well even under current economic conditions. Tamron has made a lot of great glass for E-mount cameras and I look forward to future lenses from them for Sony cameras.

  • Sales of our own brand interchangeable lenses increased even excluding favorable foreign exchange effects, driven by the launch of new mirrorless models and strong sales in Japan and Chania.
  • Although OEM sales decreased in 1st half compared to the strong sales in the previous year, full-year sales remained strong due to strong sales in 2nd half with positive impact of exchange rates.
  • Achieved record high operating income in the second consecutive year following 2022 with improving gross profit, continuing its trend of high profitability.

FY2024 forecast for Tamron Photographic Products:

  • Although OEM sales slightly decline, plan to continue increase in Own-brand sales by expanding lineup and strengthening sales in
    overseas markets.
  • Accelerate the pace of new own-brand models launches.
  • Scheduled to launch 6 new models in 2024, which will increase the new model sales ratio to 25%.
  • Despite higher material costs by rising prices of resources, plan to maintain a high profitability structure and achieve profits growth.

Sony a9III Now Shipping and In Stock

The Sony a9III is a pretty crazy camera and I am surprised it isn’t sold out everywhere, but it seems Sony has produced sufficient stock for its launch. This is good news for photographers who do not like to preorder cameras. B&H Photo and Adorama seem to have plenty while Amazon has two listings one will be stocked in 1-2 days while the other has one camera left.

Sony Alpha Blog published a very lengthy in-depth review of the Sony FE 300mm F2.8 GM OSS which you can read in full here or check out the pro/cons below. SAB seems to be very impressed with the Sony 300mm f/2.8 even with a teleconverter, but the 1.4x TC can still achieve excellent/outstanding results while the 2.0x TC only reaches very good/excellent results with f/5.6 to f/8.0 being the sweet spot.

  • Excellent AF, compatible with the 120fps of the A9III
  • Very light and compact, fit in a normal bag
  • Excellent Build quality
  • All weather resistant
  • Performances with TC 1.4
  • Excellent smooth blurry background  and 3D effect

  • Efficient optical stabilisation
  • Excellent Ergonomics
    • Very well balanced
    • Very good usability : all classical buttons
    • Function Ring
    • Drop in CPL filter possible
  • Distortion almost nill
  • Low Vignetting
  • Low CA
  • Standard lens hood easy to use (not like the 400mm and 600mm that requires a screw to be turned)

Average

  • Performances with TC2.0 in term of sharpness
  • No clics for tripod collar every 90°
  • No Arca Swiss foot
  • Price
  • Good resistance to flare but not excellent
