SAB: Sirui 23mm F1.2 Sniper Review – Good Sharpness at F1.2 With Dreamy Atmospheric Bokeh


The Sirui Sniper series of lenses is an interesting one and Sony Alpha Blog just posted their full review which you can read here or you can check out the pro/cons below:

Pros

  • Consistent design , size and weight and same filter thread of 3 lenses
  • Very good color rendition consistant between the 3 lenses
  • F1.2 aperture with dreamy rendering still with good contrast at F1.2
  • Very smooth bakcgournd blur
  • Nice 3D effects at f1.2 to isolate your subject
  • Very nice bokeh balls at f1.2 up to F2
  • Excellent sharpness in the centre as of F2.8
  • Excellent sharpness on the entire field as of F5.6
  • Very Good (sniper) to excellent build quality (Nightwalker)
  • Price
  • Size and Weight for a F1.2
  • Very good video ergonomics for the Nightwalker
  • Good Resistance to flare
  • Vignetting negligible as of F2.8
  • Firmware upgrade possible for Sniper AF series

Average

  • Bokeh balls not perfectly circular as of F2.8
  • Too simple ergonomics for Sniper AF (no button)
  • No weather sealing
  • Vignetting at f1.2
  • Moderate CA
  • Contrast could be better
  • Visible distortion
  • Min focusing distance quite long 30cm
  • Focus breathing

Cons

  • AF shows some hunting and some missfocus in 20% of the time (Sniper)
