Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Macro Announced

Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Macro: B&H Photo / Amazon

Tamron just announced the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Macro for E-mount.

The 90mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Macro Lens from Tamron for full-frame mirrorless Sony E-mount cameras puts fast aperture macro shooting into your hands. With 1:1 magnification and a 9.1″minimum focusing distance, this lens is ideal for shooting small and nearby subjects, though its short telephoto, large f/2.8 aperture, and 12-blade diaphragm will help you create stunning, flattering imagery no matter what you put in frame. Its compact, lightweight design also makes it easy and comfortable to handle whether shooting on a tripod or handheld. Moisture-resistant construction with fluorine and BBAR-G2 coatings means you can comfortably take the lens into inclement conditions.

  • 12-blade circular aperture design creates 12-ray starburst effects around point-light sources with perfectly circular bokeh
  • Focus limiter switch to reduce autofocus range for faster lock-on and to prevent it from searching its full range, reducing the chance for you to miss focus or lose your shot unnecessarily
  • Assignable focus set button that can be reconfigured with the use of the Tamron Lens Utility software
  • Calibrated focus ring and rotational torque for precise manual focusing and smooth adjustment
  • Specially designed hood with sliding window for easy filter swapping
  • Compatible with Tamron Lens Utility software for customizing settings, assigning functions, and updating firmware

Overall, it’s a very versatile and deeply satisfying lens for wide-ranging shooting scenarios and, while it’s pretty pricey to buy, it’s well worth the outlay.

FeaturesThere’s a strong feature set but it lacks optical image stabilization, which can be a problem when using some older camera bodies.★★★★
DesignThe up-market design includes a click/de-click aperture ring and dual function buttons.★★★★★
PerformanceFast and accurate autofocus along with superb image quality make the lens a great performer.★★★★★
ValueIt’s a fairly expensive lens to buy but good value considering its excellent versatility.★★★★

TTArtisan 90mm f/1.25 Showing Up Discontinued

TTArtisan 90mm f/1.25: Amazon / B&H Photo

The TTArtisan 90mm f/1.25 has been showing up as discontinued overseas and at B&H Photo for various mounts, so this lens will likely be hard to find soon. I think it is one of the best fast 90mm manual lenses at any price point and it even compares well to the outrageously expensive Leica Summilux-M 90mm f/1.5 ASPH. I own this lens for M-mount and adapt it for other cameras without issue.

Chinese Autofocus Zoom Lenses Coming Soon

There are multiple Chinese autofocus zoom lenses going into production soon that could be from VILTROX, SIRUI, 7Artisans, LAOWA, and DZOFilm according to weibo.

Big news! Another domestic brand is developing a zoom auto lens. Mr. Ma just got the exclusive news, and it is a big zoom lens! So, there are currently three domestic brands developing zoom auto lenses, one of which is developing full-frame and APS-C zoom lenses (common focal lengths) at the same time; the zoom auto lenses being developed by the other two are currently unknown.

Chinese manufacturers are expanding their lens lineups with Viltrox being one of the first to tease an upcoming zoom. In fact Viltrox just announced a nonautofocus zoom lens that we haven’t covered here, but it is going to be a stupid expensive lens the 10x zoom VILTROX LUNA 42-420mm T5.6 Large-Format Cine Zoom for medium format sensors. It can create a 60mm image circle that comfortably covers the sensors in the GFX100SII and Hasselblad X2D with a T5.6 aperture.

Chinese lens makers have caught up to global lens makers in almost every way and with Chinese autofocus zoom lenses on the way photography could become exponentially more affordable in the not-too-distant future.
