DPReviewTV: Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD FE

Surprisingly DPReviewTV was unable to secure a Sony a7RIII to test the new Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD FE, which is currently a hard lens to find. So they did all of their testing on a Sony a7RII. Overall they seem impressed with the lens, but they try to downplay the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD FE being a replacement for the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM, which is understandable for the price is no object photographer, but they do not go into any kind of detailed comparison as to why.

Pros
f/2.8
Light and Compact
Price
Smooth Zoom Ring
Smooth Manual Focus
Great Macro capabilities
Minimal CA
Impressively Sharp
Great for Landscape cropped down shooting wide
Mirrorless dream smaller lighter kit

Cons
Build Quality
Cheap Plastic Hood
No in lens stabilization
No AF/MF Switch
No Custom Button
Zoom and Focus Ring Reversed
Sometimes you just want the extra 4mm
Some Ghosting/Flare which is typical in a zoom
Vignetting
Wide open long range might be disappointing

DPReviewTV thinks the Tamron should be compared to the Sony 24-70 f/4 or 24-105 f/4, but many reviewers disagree. The vast majority of the comparisons to the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM have been very fair and honest about how the lenses stacks up. Maybe DPRTV should do a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD FE vs Sony 24-70mm f/4 Vario-Tessar T FE OSS vs Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS video to show us why they are right.

No lens is perfect and there is nothing wrong with value options that compete with top tear lenses. Many have decided to buy the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD FE and they have accepted the lenses shortcomings at its price point. One of the great things about shooting mirrorless and Sony’s lens selection growing is that there is something for everyone and I personally think the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD FE is the best zoom for a photographer unwilling to spend 2k+ on a full frame lens. Hopefully, the competition will drive Sony’s prices down a little.
