Sony a9: Over Heating? Will The Sony a9 Be a Game Changer or a Lemon?

After 20 minutes of shooting That 1 Cameraguy experienced an overheating indicator in 80-degree weather after 20 minutes of shooting. I wonder how the Sony a9 is going to perform under Florida’s sun this Summer when it’s regularly in the high 90’s outdoors. Maybe Sony should have made the Sony a9 a little bigger for a beefy heat sink inside. It looks like I am going to be testing for a lot of bugs before I actually get to enjoy shooting the Sony a9 some.

Amar Talwar cited my last post about the Sony a9 and even preempted my post today a little, but I think he confused the source of the overheating report with the video above since it was published less than an hour ago. I comb through a ton of information for readers and try to distil it down so that you don’t have to waste your time being marked to, which is a huge problem in the world of Sony because Sony spends a massive amount of money trying to make reviewers happy. While cameras like the Sony a7RII are absolutely spectacular technologically they have issues and I have remained hopeful that Sony will address them this generation.

Sony completely botching the Sony a9 would be shocking, but having a large defect rate would not be surprising to me at all considering how complex their cameras are and the rate they try to produce them at compared to other camera companies. Only time will tell if the Sony a9 is a game changer or a Lemon that should be recalled. If every camera experiences overheating and banding across the board, then Sony is going to be in big trouble since these issues can’t be fully resolved via firmware. Camera lockups and bugs are less of a concern because Sony should rush to fix them, but things aren’t looking very good.

I should receive my camera this Tuesday and I will push it hard from day one to reproduce any reported issues. Please let me know if you come across additional issues. I was hopeful this would be a smooth camera launch, but we are off to a rocky start.
