PT: Sigma Interview at Salon de la Photo 2024 – Atypical Lens Design, Record Sales, Canon RF Mount, Camera Company Talk, Hybrid Shooters, and More

French photography site Phototrend published its interview with Managing Director Foucauld Prové from Sigma at the Salon de la Photo 2024 show which you can read in French here and check out a translated summary of it below:

  • Sigma has launched some great lenses in 2024 including the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art II and the unique Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN Art
  • Sigma just presented a Cine AF lens at IBC 2024
  • The Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN and Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for RF mount in September
  • Canon RF mount is slowly allowing third parties to produce AF lenses
  • Sigma has more APS-C lenses coming to RF mount including the 16mm, 23mm, 30mm, and 56mm f/1.4 lenses in January
  • Sigma RF lenses have done well because there aren’t a lot of great APS-C lenses for RF mount
  • Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art II sales have been strong so Sigma is pleased
  • Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN Art has been well received but it is a very high-end product
  • Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8 DG DN Art has been received surprisingly well with many wedding and concert photographers finding it is the only lens they need
  • Sigma wants to support hybrid shooters including follow-focus systems
  • Sigam is an independent company and the CEO isn’t focused on high-volume production lenses so need determines what they build more than market size
  • The Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG DN Art and Sigma 15mm f/1.4 Diagonal Fisheye are examples of lenses that are very niche, but Sigma made them anyways
  • There is growing demand for the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG DN Art and Sigma 15mm f/1.4 Diagonal Fisheye for Milkyway photography
  • The Sigma 500mm f/5.6 DG DN OS Sports was developed to demonstrate Sigma’s technological prowess by creating a light, sharp, compact telephoto lens
  •  Sigma has many telephoto lenses for sports and wildlife and has been developing lenses for these tasks for over 15 years
  • Sigma was founded by an engineer and the majority of employees are engineers so they could do anything including a Sigma 100-300mm f/2.8, which wouldn’t be much different than the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM.
  • Canon and Sigma developed similar 28-105mm and 24-105mm f/2.8 lenses simply because they both identified a need around the same time, but they didn’t copy each other because lens design takes a very long time
  • Post COVID has been very positive for Sigma because people changed their spending habits and there has been a surge in YouTubers, vloggers, streamers in general
  • Sigma has had its best years in history over the last three years globally and the future is looking good too
  • E-mount has the strongest demand and demand for RF mount is growing quickly
  • France has the most L-mount bodies in the world proportionally thanks to strong Panasonic sales
  • Canon is the largest overall, but Sony has made phenomenal progress and Nikon is still huge like Canon if you consider the entire market
  • When you get into market segments Sony surpasses Nikon and Fujifilm has a strong showing too when considering their hybrid bodies and instant cameras with gigantic turnover, which makes it almost the size of Canon
  • Sigma has brought up Nikon because as of now Nikon seems to be in a small high-end niche market
  • Sony is bigger than Nikon largely because they have camera options for everyone including APS-C
  • If Sigma launched a Contemporary 70-200mm it would likely be a Sigma 70-200mm f/4 DC DN Contemporary, but Sigma isn’t convinced that a more compact lightweight 70-200mm f/4 would sell well
  • Sigma could also launch a Sigma 70-300mm that is ultra-high quality and compact
  • Sigma covers the traditional 14-24mm, 16-28mm, 24-70mm, 28-70mm, 70-200mm lenses, but also wants to offer more atypical products

SIRUI teased its new Full Frame autofocus f/1.4 lens on weibo which will certainly come to Sony FE mount. I hope they release something unique because there are already tons of 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.4 AF lenses for E-mount. They also make some great anamorphic lenses.

Odd Sony a7V Preorder Listing

There is a Sony a7V preorder listing with vhdigital that has an interesting image associated with it that is likely fake. The Specs are the Sony a7IV specs and the listing is here, but I highly advise against anyone ordering this whether you believe the retailer to be legitimate or not.
