The Sony Excalibur

Bonsai of Rockville, MD created a camera rig for filming 360 6K video that utilizes 4 Sony a7SII cameras with Rokinon 8mm Fisheye lens that fits in-between consumer 360 cameras and $40,000 professional 360 cameras that creates great results. Their rig also corrects some common problems for 360 video footage “For instance, Excalibur comes with a single remote to start all four cameras at once. Also included is Bonsai’s own Arborist file handling software, which syncs the footage from the four cameras’ separate SD cards—an otherwise painful task, Katz says. Bonsai also plans to release a single battery system in April for Excalibur, so users won’t have to charge and insert four separate camera batteries before use.”

DPReview: Sigma CP+ 2017 Interview

DPReview has a brief interview with the CEO of Sigma Kazuto Yamaki that covers a variety of topics including native Sigma E-mount glass and the Sigma MC-11 adapter. Below are some key excerpts.

  • Our plan is to develop full-frame lenses for Sony E mount, and in the future we will have more E mount lenses. But it takes time. Normally it takes about two years to develop one lens, sometimes three. So even if I start the process now, the lens might come out in two years time.
  • Weather sealing isn’t a lot of work.
  • Custom machinery had to be designed to make the glass for the 12-24mm, which allowed them to make a 14mm f/1.8 later.
  • The perception of Sigma is changing. Now the brand gets more respect for quality glass.
  • They don’t want to grow too quickly.
  • Data on the Cine lens market isn’t good, so entering it is a gamble, but their lenses are designed for 8k.
  • Sigma must release lenses that add to the photographic community.

Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 vs Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8

Jason Lanier started his Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 review and so far he doesn’t see much of an advantage buying a Zeiss Basis 85mm f/1.8 over the Sony FE 85mm f/1.8. I wonder how the G Master will compare when Jason gets to it.
