Sony a9: Technical Testing Roundup

The Sony a9 is being picked apart by some of the best technical reviews out there now and there aren’t a lot of huge complaints about the camera compared to the cameras it’s designed to compete with. The Last Word did a lot of great testing of the Fujifilm GFX so I am looking forward to a similar level of coverage of the Sony a9. Hopefully, some of the problems that photographers have experience can be fixed by firmware update, but the one major one which most likely will not be correct is overheating.

I just received my Sony a9 today and I honestly thought it would be a little bigger. I plan to do some extreme testing of its thermal limitations as soon as possible, so stay tuned. This kind of camera shouldn’t overheat while shooting photos, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see it overheat shooting 4k since Sony has a history.

Upcoming Sony Camera Teaser

Yesterday Sony China released a teaser for a new camera, and Photorumors thinks it might be a Sony RX1R Mark 3 or new RX model. It’s rare that we don’t have a pretty good idea about what is coming, but I doubt it will be an RX camera since that was recently refreshed and since the point and shoot market is dead it might be something newish. Maybe Sony will release a 360 action camera or new regular action cameras since they are the modern point and shoot camera for most people.

Photonstophotos: Sony a9 vs Nikon D5, Canon 1D X Mark II, Sony a7 Mark 2, Sony a7R Mark 2

Photonstophotos updated their Sony a9 results with final data and it performs very well against its competitors up till 3200 ISO, where the Nikon D5 just edges it out. It’s good to see that the electronic shutter of the Sony a9 doesn’t affect the dynamic range of the a9 much according to Photonstophotos’ results. The Sony a9, beats the Canon 1D X Mark II across the board, but falls just behind the Nikon D5 in low light, while besting it in maximum dynamic range. You can manipulate the chart above here.

Nikon D59.42717811.17
Canon EOS 1D X Mark II10.46518910.70

Maybe more interestingly the Sony a9 is bested by both the Sony a7 Mark 2 and a7R Mark 2 in dynamic range, but beats the Sony a7 Mark 2 in low light. The Sony a7 Mark 2 lineup of cameras still contains some of the best full frame sensors on the market, with the Sony a7R Mark 2 continuing to dominate, but the a9 does very well while using it’s standard shutter. You can manipulate the results here.

Sony a9: Over Heating? Will The Sony a9 Be a Game Changer or a Lemon?

After 20 minutes of shooting That 1 Cameraguy experienced an overheating indicator in 80-degree weather after 20 minutes of shooting. I wonder how the Sony a9 is going to perform under Florida’s sun this Summer when it’s regularly in the high 90’s outdoors. Maybe Sony should have made the Sony a9 a little bigger for a beefy heat sink inside. It looks like I am going to be testing for a lot of bugs before I actually get to enjoy shooting the Sony a9 some.

Amar Talwar cited my last post about the Sony a9 and even preempted my post today a little, but I think he confused the source of the overheating report with the video above since it was published less than an hour ago. I comb through a ton of information for readers and try to distil it down so that you don’t have to waste your time being marked to, which is a huge problem in the world of Sony because Sony spends a massive amount of money trying to make reviewers happy. While cameras like the Sony a7RII are absolutely spectacular technologically they have issues and I have remained hopeful that Sony will address them this generation.

Sony completely botching the Sony a9 would be shocking, but having a large defect rate would not be surprising to me at all considering how complex their cameras are and the rate they try to produce them at compared to other camera companies. Only time will tell if the Sony a9 is a game changer or a Lemon that should be recalled. If every camera experiences overheating and banding across the board, then Sony is going to be in big trouble since these issues can’t be fully resolved via firmware. Camera lockups and bugs are less of a concern because Sony should rush to fix them, but things aren’t looking very good.

I should receive my camera this Tuesday and I will push it hard from day one to reproduce any reported issues. Please let me know if you come across additional issues. I was hopeful this would be a smooth camera launch, but we are off to a rocky start.

Sony a9: Potential Shortcomings and Roundup

Some of the early post-launch reviews have been very positive, but there are a few articles of concern surfacing worth taking looking at more closely. diglloyd reported pattern/banding noise at 100 ISO, which might be from a faulty camera, but no one else has reproduced his results, and the site is a paid site. Hopefully, Reidreviews will cover the a9 and put the issue to rest, because I have found some of diglloyds results a bit sensational.

In other news, Jason Lanier came under fire for his Sony a9 testing. He’s been promoting the camera pretty hard, and his recent ISO test is being called invalid by many on YouTube. Digital camera ISO is a touchy subject among modern photographers because every camera handles ISO a little differently, but I shoot a lot of truly low light photography with my cameras, so ill check it out when I receive the camera. We already know the a9 does not have an ISO invariant sensor, which means that it’s not likely to have great high ISO performance, but the actual high ISO performance of the camera is yet to be seen since most “testers” are just stopping down the aperture while increasing the ISO. The most brutal way to test ISO is when you can’t drop your shutter speed anymore or open your aperture any wider.
