DPReview: Sony a7RIII vs Nikon D850 Dynamic Range Comparison

Sony a7R II13.2114.41

DPReview produced some of their own dynamic range results showing that the Sony a7RIII has a half stop dynamic range improvement over the a7RII. It seems everyone is out to measure dynamic range today because that is one of the few major areas of improvement, but sites like Photons to Photos are far more scientifically accurate for this kind of data. The Nikon D850’s ability to shoot below 100 ISO allows it to pull ahead in dynamic range testing, but once you move beyond 100 ISO the a7RIII pulls ahead. It’s a shame Sony doesn’t spend more time on their firmware because they might be able to rectify this “short coming.” It seems Sony’s claim of 15 stops of dynamic range is only true when shrinking your file down to 8MP for print, which isn’t overly impressive. Sony Fiscal Year 2017 Q2: Imaging Division Healthy and Profitable

Second quarter sales increased 16% year-on-year and operating income increased 4 billion yen to 18.9 billion yen. The increase in sales and operating income was primarily due to the impact of foreign exchange rates and the absence in the current quarter of the impact from the Kumamoto Earthquakes in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year.

There is no change to our forecast for the fiscal year

Sony a7R III vs D850 With Raw Files and More

Tony & Chelsea Northrup made some RAW files from the Sony a7R III available here and conquer with Photons to Photos findings that the a7RIII doesn’t enjoy a dynamic range advantage over the a7RII. They also did not notice an improvement in image quality, but they performance improvements are substantial. Compared to the D850 there isn’t a big difference in image quality and you can get a complete kit for slightly less with the D850 thanks to third parties, but the Sony a7RIII is more camera for the money. I am curious if they actually got that extra stop of IBIS performance that they are advertising now.

Sony Savings Sunday Continues

The current Sony a7RII sale has become a lot more attractive. Since all of the rumors about the Sony a7RIII ended up being wrong. Many rumor sites out there are just guessing because it is very difficult to fill a site with brand-specific rumors. At least the consolation prize is some of the best deals on the Sony a7RII tied to the launch of the a7RIII that we have seen so far. Both cameras should perform similarly in image quality, but the a7RIII is for photographers that need a little more speed. You really can’t go wrong picking either camera for image quality though. The Sony a7RII/a7RIII and Sony a9 are the best full frame cameras made today in many photographers eyes so you really can’t go wrong with any of them.

Sony Continues to Assert 2nd Place Full Frame Position in The World

dc.watch released a rather lengthy article that doesn’t translate very well, about a meeting Sony hosted relating to the growth of Sony cameras and how things are looking up since recovering from the Kumamoto earthquake. Thankfully digicame-info’s summary of the article translates more clearly so we can better understand Sony’s presentation.

Domestic share of Sony lens interchangeable full size camera is second place

An article on the industry trend of Mirror-less mentioned at digital experience Watch, Sony’s α7 R III experiences meeting is posted.

· Sony A, which continues to perform well, the influence of the truth “α 7 R III” on the market is

  • Sony held an experiential meeting of “α 7 R III” announced on October 25 in Tokyo.First of all, at the experiential meeting, the good condition of the mirrorless camera market was told.
  • The domestic market of the digital camera as a whole has been on a downward trend since 2014, and the decrease of compact digital cameras is remarkable, in particular.Mirrorless cameras began to emerge as lens interchangeable cameras could not escape from the declining trend without missing examples. Specifically, in the first half of 2017, single lens reflex cameras only slightly decreased by 95% compared to the same period of the previous year, whereas mirrorless cameras achieved a 24% increase. Looking at the composition ratio, 56% of single-lens reflex cameras and 44% of mirrors-less cameras are no longer different (all amounts are).
  • Of the mirrorless cameras, α has seen decreasing once in 2016 when the Kumamoto earthquake occurred, but it turned to expansion again in the first half of 2017. As a result, Sony’s share of the full-size lens interchangeable camera is 29% unit, 18% amount (* Note: this part is an error in the original article, 18% seems to be the share of the interchangeable lens’ amount) Record. Both of them gained the second largest domestic position (according to GfK Japan investigation).

The article that “Sony’s full-size share became second place” was published earlier overseas, but it seems that Sony’s full-sized machine’s share is second in Japan as well.

Following α9 which gathered topics with AF and continuous shooting performance, α 7 R III of a new high pixel machine also appeared, so it is expected that market share will grow in the future.

Also, the market share of mirrorless cameras in the first half of this year is 44% on a monetary basis, so it came to almost the same point as the SLR.

[Additional notes] Looking at Sony’s slide, it seems that there is an error in the original article text, and “18%” in the article seems to be the share of the amount of interchangeable lenses.

Photons to Photos Preliminary Dynamic Range Results Are In Sony a7RIII vs Nikon D850 vs Fujifilm GFX vs Canon 5D Mark IV

Photons to Photos Preliminary dynamic range results have been released and they are certainly disappointing for Sony fans if you’re not familiar with the site, which always skews conservatively. You can expect the Sony a7RIII to perform slightly better when final results are available, but it’s unlikely it will surpass the GFX, which makes me wonder where Sony gets their 15 stops of dynamic range measurement from. It’s very interesting that Sony’s claimed dynamic range improvements are not showing up in initial testing. You can manipulate the results here.

Even if there isn’t a jump in dynamic range the Sony a7RIII has a technological advantage over its predecessor. With Sony a9 like performance, it’s very easy to get sharp photos even if you’re new to the system. Many enjoy owning a camera that selectively tracks the human eye so accurately with good image stabilization and Sony is only getting better at this task, while cameras like the GFX only offer the feature as a novelty. Of course, we would get better results and coverage if the bloggers that got access to these events actually owned the cameras they were writing about.
