RAW POWER Takes on Lightroom

RAW Power is developed by Nik Bhatt, the former Senior engineer in charge of the photo apps group at Apple while Aperture was in development. RAW Power comes for OSX and iOS and works through the photo’s library on iCloud so everything syncs similar to Lightroom. Further, the interview with Nik Bhatt exposes some interesting details about how iOS deals with RAW files. Apparently, iOS doesn’t allow you to edit RAW data by default, but iOS does have a RAW engine. So Apple’s Photo App simply allows you to edit a JPEG file inside of imported RAW files, while RAW Power allows you to manipulate your RAW files with Apple’s RAW engine.

RAW Power’s solution seems to be simple and elegant from the above video and hopefully, ON1 delivers a similar solution in the future since they are already working on an iOS app. Unfortunately, it sounds like Luminar won’t develop an iOS app unless they hear from more photographers that want one, but I believe that the future is being able to edit your library on any device you have with you. Mobility will be key going forward as photographers move away from traditional computers.

Microsoft made this a lot easier with their surface devices and Windows 8/10, which allowed them to jump ahead of Apple in many ways, but Microsoft didn’t completely succeed with their phone. Apple also made steps towards merging iOS and OSX with the release of iOS11, but we are probably still a few years off from a unified OS for Apple devices so an iOS companion app is significant to compete with Lightroom in my opinion.

Sony a7RIII vs a7RII, Press Trip, 10fps at 240fps, Reviews, and More

The Sony a7RIII is selling very well, but so far the only stand out feature seems to be speed. While I enjoyed my time with the Sony a9 the only thing I miss about the camera is it’s amazing AF speed and if the a7RIII is even remotely close in performance I will be completely satisfied with my purchase. For some, the 42MP will be a huge step up, but if you owned the previous a7RII you shouldn’t notice much of a difference.

As for pixel shift, the technology produces some amazing results, but the one-minute minimum photo length is very limiting. I would be interested in seeing a comparison between pixel shift and HDR detail recovery in the near future since both methods have to be done manually after the fact. There are a few different tricks photographers can use to get additional detail from their photos, but most don’t take the time to do them because they are very time-consuming.

Sigma CEO Yamaki-san Talks About Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary And A Future Sigma Lens

According to Sigma’s CEO Yamaki-san the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN has glass specifically designed for mirrorless cameras and it has ART level performance. There isn’t a whole lot of information in this interview, but Yamaki-san promises that there will be a mid-level telephoto lens released for mirrorless in the future from Sigma.

DPReview Updated Studio Scene With Sony a7RIII and Results Aren’t Impressive

DPReview updated their studio scene with results form the Sony a7RIII and personally, I find the high ISO results less than impressive. I always like to go straight to the more fibrous/3d parts of DPReview’s studio comparison when looking at how a camera performs and while base ISO looks pretty good I wouldn’t use the a7RIII above 6400 ISO. By 12,800 ISO the a7RIII loses too much detail, but there might be a slight issue with DPReviews test if you pixel peep around. At times the a7RII looks better than the a7RIII, while the D850 and GFX almost always look a little better. Maybe the small Sony a7 is a little off axis during testing or maybe this is an optical weakness.

Some sites might try to paint a rosy picture here, but the a7RIII does seem to be performing below the a7RII in some respects and it is very hard to tell if the testing is flawed or the camera. Thankfully the performance claims of the a7RIII do seem to live up to expectation from the videos that we have seen on Youtube, but the a7RIII won’t be replacing the a7S anytime soon.

Sony a7RIII Delayed Until December

The Sony a7RIII sold significantly better than expected, which is going to cause a delay according to Sony Japan.

Dear Customer,

Announcement concerning supply of digital single lens camera “α7 R III”

Thank you very much for your patronage of Sony products.

The order received from Tuesday, October 31, the digital single lens reflex camera “α 7 R III” has received orders exceeding our expectations greatly, and it is time to receive time to deliver goods I will. For reservations up to the release date it will be delivered in order by early December.

We will do our utmost to respond to customer’s request as much as possible, so please wait for a while.

It looks like the Sony a7RIII will be in short supply for a while to come similar to when the a7RII came out. I’m not sure why companies prefer delaying their shipments over making some limited shipments over time, but other camera companies have done this recently as Photorumors points out.

So if you want a Sony a7RIII anytime soon make sure to get your preorder in now and join our Sony a7 Owners Group, also follow SonyAddict on Facebook and Twitter.
