Sony a7RIII Sigma MC-11 + Sigma ART Performance and Video Performance Roundup

If you took advantage of the Sigma ART sale and own a Sony a7RIII with Sigma MC-11 you are probably pretty happy with your purchases. It looks like the combination works very well together. I don’t personally adapt glass beside Leica M-mount, but I know a lot of photographers do that shoot two systems or have preferences. Sigma ART lenses are very well known and respected so I am sure there are many that would love to use them on Sony cameras and maybe we will be able to use them natively someday, but until then we will have to settle for the Sigma MC-11 adapter.

The Adapter even works with video, but you might not like the video color performance as much as the Sony a7RII if that was your previous Sony camera. The first color comparison video has emerged and the default profiles look a little inferior. In fact, it might take quite a bit of work to make the Sony a7RIII look as good as the Sony a7RII. Beyond color, the Sony a7RIII does seem to perform significantly better than the Sony a7RII while recording video, but color correcting video can be a chore depending on how particular you are and how familiar you are with the process.

The TechArt Pro continues to improve with firmware 6.0. Below is a list of how the update improves the adapter for the Sony a7RIII and Sony a9. I noticed some issues with the adapter last time I used it on my a7RIII and am glad to see TechArt handled them promptly.

  • It corresponds to Sony α9, Sony α7 III.
  • Continuous AF (AF – C) has been improved to improve performance.
  • The update isn’t recommended for users of other cameras

Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS and Silver Sony a6300 Preorders Now Open

The Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS and Silver Sony a6300 that were announced a few days ago are now available for preorder. It’s interesting how Sony expands the available colors of older cameras as newer ones become available like the a6500 and soon to be announced Sony a6700. I wonder what kind of research Sony has done into camera segmentation and color that leads to these decisions. I could be interesting if the original Sony a7 eventually reached a price point low enough for this to start happening.
