BCN: Sony on Top

According to BCN, one of Japan’s largest sales trackers, Sony is currently the overall market leader, with 29.7% of sales followed by Canon with 26.3%. The Sony ZV-E10II was also knocked out of the top sales spot by the Canon EOS R50, which became the top seller.

In January 2025, Sony led the market in unit sales share by manufacturer, maintaining the top position for the third consecutive month with a 29.7% share. Canon ranked second with a 26.3% share. Together, these two companies accounted for more than half of the market.

The top-selling model ranking for January 2025 saw Canon’s EOS R50 take first place, reclaiming the top spot for the first time in two months by overtaking Sony’s VLOGCAM ZV-E10 II.

Sony Q3 FY2024 Consolidated Financial Results

Entertainment, Technology & Service Segment take aways.

  • Next is the ET&S segment.
  • Sales for the quarter decreased 4% year-on-year to 704.5 billion yen, primarily due to a decrease in unit sales of televisions, while operating income remained essentially flat at 77.1 billion yen.
  • The full-year forecast is unchanged from the previous forecast.

Imaging & Sensing Solutions Segment Take Aways.

  • Next is the I&SS segment.
  • Sales for the quarter were essentially flat year-on-year at 500.9 billion yen, primarily due to a decrease in sales of mobile image sensors offsetting the impact of foreign exchange rates.
  • Despite the positive impact of foreign exchange rates, operating income decreased 2% year-on-year to 97.5 billion yen primarily due to increased manufacturing costs and the impact of the decreased sales.
  • We have slightly increased the full-year sales forecast from the previous forecast to 1 trillion 790 billion yen, while the forecast for operating income is unchanged.

Zeiss is Back!

Zeiss has been relatively dormant since the Ziess ZX1 failed and many worried they would get out of photography since they have no released a lens in over 6 years, but it looks like that is about to change. Zeiss posted a teaser to its Instagram account the other day teasing that a new product would be coming soon. We might see Zeiss’s new product  as early as the CP+ show in Japan this year, so maybe there will be a leak soon.
