First Lok: Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS

Lok got his hands on a Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS at a launch event and he seems to be very impressed with how it handles, especially it’s lightweight. Canon and Nikon better release lighter 400mm lenses soon and for their upcoming mirrorless cameras or Sony’s new 400mm might start taking over the market. There is nothing worse than lugging around extra weight when you have a long day of photography ahead of you and the Sony a9’s new Z-battery makes shooting Sony all day a dream.

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD FE Compared to The Sony Zeiss 24-70mm f/4 Vario-Tessar T FE OSS

I received my Tamron from B&H Photo yesterday and it is impressively small for the specs. I included a photo showing how it compares to the Sony Zeiss 24-70mm f/4 Vario-Tessar T FE OSS, below, which is currently one of Sony’s most compact zoom lenses and it isn’t much bigger considering it’s a f/2.8 lens. The Zeiss is a little lighter at 426g, but the Tamron isn’t much heavier at 550g, which is much lighter than the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM at 886g.

I might get my hands on one soon for a comparison, but the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD FE is a far superior lens to the Sony Zeiss 24-70mm f/4 Vario-Tessar T FE OSS so far and I will likely sell it when I get a wide Sony zoom. Free Sony a9 With Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS Purchase in Ukraine?

Fotomagazinpaparazzi a retailer in Ukraine is offering a free Sony a9 with Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS for a limited time. The deal requires you to put 50% down and then pay the other 50% upon receipt of the lens, only then will they send you a free Sony a9. This strange promotion seems to be specific to the site and is probably just Fotomagazinpaparazzi playing with their profit margins to sell more lenses.

Sony is known for having a high-profit margin and I have been told by multiple retailers about Sony offering them ridiculous discounts in the neighborhood of 50% so this deal just might be legit. Maybe some readers can take advantage, but if you do not live in Ukraine this kind of deal might come with warranty claim issues. Maybe other retailers will put together similar bundles in the future, in which case the Sony 400mm f/2.8 will become a bargain.
