Development of a Film That Can Repeat Drawing and Erasing in Full Color

Development of a film that can repeat drawing and erasing in full color
We realize various color decoration designs to user preference

Sony has newly developed a film that can be repeatedly drawn and erased in full color and a laser irradiation technology that realizes it at high speed. By using this film and laser irradiation technology, design and color variation are realized according to each user’s preference. In addition, because it is possible to draw repeatedly, it is also possible to change the design and color later according to the change of the user’s interest and preference.

The film developed this time contains a photothermal conversion agent that converts laser light into heat, leuco dyes that have each color of cyan, magenta, and yellow, materials that can change its color development state by heat, etc. using Sony’s proprietary technology Achieved by layering. Since the drawing is performed by the change of the coloring state by the heat, the gradation can be expressed not by stepwise dot expression but by fine gradation. Vivid color expression of the picture quality level is possible.

In addition, because it uses non-contact laser light, it corresponds to various shapes and increases design freedom. It is possible to draw even through transparent glass and plastic, which was difficult with conventional printing technology, and can express various designs and color variations while maintaining the high-quality surface texture inherent to materials such as glass. In addition, this developed product is considered to be applied to various applications other than decorative applications where full-color repetitive drawing is required.

Sony will continue to create new value through technology.

This result was selected as Distinguished Paper at Display Week 2019 of the Society for Display Displays (Society for Information Display) held in San Jose, California, USA from May 12, 2019 (local time). We announced at this meeting on Thursday 16th.
