DPRTV: Sony a7RIV Preview

DPRTV released their preview of the Sony a7RIV and it’s obviously pretty positive. Below are excerpts from the video:

  • The Sony a7RIV gives us a look at what will be coming with the Sony a7SIII and other cameras
  • Very good high ISO performance
  • Rolling shutter is severe so the electronic shutter isn’t very useful
  • Great AF, which Sony is known for
  • Real-time tracking is their favorite AF system
  • Great new EVF that is beautiful
  • 120fps EVF at lower resolution and 60fps with better image quality
  • Return of pixel shift and it works a little differently because it can shoot 16 instead of 4 to get a 240MP photo, but there is no way to preview it on the camera
  • Pixel shift works with their image edge software which isn’t great
  • Major ergonomic changes
  • More usable joystick
  • Bigger AF on button and front dial along with an improved on and off switch
  • Locking exposure compensation dial on the top which doesn’t need to be heald in
  • The back top dial isn’t great on the beta hardware but might be fixed on the final camera
  • The new sensor is the biggest difference between the a7RIII and a7RIV
  • You will want to use super 35 if you want the best image quality
  • Super 35 is a 1.6x crop shooting at 24p and a 1.8x crop at 30p
  • Picture profiles are the same as a7RIII
  • HLG isn’t technically HLG if it’s not 10-bit
  • Eye detect AF and real-time tracking while filming video is impressive
  • Real-time tracking in video is hidden in the menus
  • Disappointed in the a7RIV as a video camera and hope it will be better with the Sony a7SIII or maybe they will call is a7SIV
  • Have been asking Sony to improve basic things like the touch screen and menus for years, but Sony has largely ignored the criticisms
  • At the Sony a7RIV’s price point it is hard to dismiss the camera as a viable high-resolution model
  • The full review will come when they get a production camera

Sony on 4:2:2 10-bit, UHS-II, XQD and The a7RIV/a9

Imaging Resource spoke with Sony about why they haven’t added internal 4:2:2 10-bit yet and below is a summary of why and when it will come.

  • Sony a7RIV doesn’t do 4:2:2 10-bit internally because of the sensor and type of camera, but it can do 4:2:2 with an external recorder
  • There are lots of features like C-AF, Frame rate, Exposure being locked, Codec, Dynamic range, Color Space that play into the limitations of a camera and Sony is chipping away at them and trying to perfect them including 4:2:2 10-bit internal
  • Sony thinks lightness is one of the five most important features even though that a7RIV is a little bigger
  • The redesign of the grip made the a7RIV larger and the grip was something photographers wanted
  • Sony only makes cameras larger when there is a technical reason
  • The grip is important, but hard to balance with keeping things small
  • The speed and responsiveness with full-frame makes it very appealing and they aren’t trying to discount medium format
  • Sony doesn’t really want to say the Sony a7RIV is their flagship camera and they think it’s fairer to say the Sony a9 is still the flagship
  • For some photographers capturing more data is very important
  • File management can become a concern with higher resolution
  • For some resolution is going to be the feature that makes something flagship
  • Sony went UHS-II instead of XQD because the more advanced and capable cards are still on the expensive side and you can get larger UHS-II cards now for a good price
  • The buffer in the camera also helps to mitigate card read/write speeds becoming an issue
  • State of the art SD is very robust
