overview

  • [Publication number] P2025043459
  • [Release date] 2025-04-01
  • [Name of invention] Large aperture ratio telephoto zoom lens
  • [Application date] 2023-09-19
  • [Applicant]
    [Identification number] 000131326
[Name or company name] Sigma Corporation
  • According to the present invention, there is provided a large aperture ratio telephoto zoom lens having high optical performance, which is compact and lightweight while being equipped with an anti-vibration mechanism and a quiet and high-speed focus mechanism.
  • [Background Art]
    [0002]
In recent years, the number of pixels in digital cameras has increased and pixel density has increased, and so zoom lenses with high optical performance are in demand. In particular, in order to resolve images up to high spatial frequencies, it is desirable to reduce various aberrations. However, in general, the larger the aperture ratio, the more difficult it becomes to suppress aberrations.
  • [0003]
In addition, the larger the aperture ratio, the larger the lens diameter, making it difficult to reduce the weight of the lens. In particular, in a telephoto zoom lens with a large aperture ratio, the focus lens group tends to be heavy, and it becomes necessary to use a large actuator to achieve quiet and high-speed focus drive. However, using a large actuator goes against the weight reduction of the zoom lens. Therefore, by making the focus lens group smaller and lighter, quiet and high-speed focus drive is realized without making the actuator larger (for example, Patent Document 2).
  • [0004]
Similarly, the larger the aperture ratio, the heavier the anti-vibration lens group tends to be, making it necessary to use a large actuator. However, by making the anti-vibration lens group smaller and lighter, it is possible to achieve high tracking performance of the anti-vibration drive (movement of the imaging position by shifting the anti-vibration lens group) without making the actuator larger (for example, Patent Documents 1 and 2).
  • [0009]
The present invention has been made in consideration of the above-mentioned circumstances, and has as its object to provide a large aperture ratio telephoto zoom lens having high optical performance, which is equipped with an anti-vibration mechanism and a quiet and high-speed focus mechanism, while also being compact and lightweight.

Example 1

  • Focal length: 72.10-194.00
  • F-number: 2.91-2.92
  • Angle of view: 32.93-12.18
  • Image height: 21.63
  • Overall length: 222.00

OL: Viltrox AF 50mm f/2 Review – Very Consistent And Very Sharp

Viltrox AF 50mm f/2: B&H Photo / Amazon

Optical Limits posted its full Viltrox AF 50mm f/2 review, which you can read in full here, or check out the excerpt below:

…The Viltrox AF 50mm f/2 FE is not only very consistent but also very sharp across the relevant aperture range. The center quality is excellent straight from f/2 and the outer image field is easily very good. The peak performance at f/4 is truly impressive. Image distortions and lateral CAs are very low. Axial CAs are a somewhat noticeable at f/2, but it’s nothing out of the ordinary. The quality of the bokeh may not be the greatest of them all, but it’s quite decent for a fifty.

Mechanically, the lens stays true to its “Air” designation. It’s very lightweight, yet the execution is very decent for a consumer grade lens. The engineered plastics are of good quality and the focus ring turns smoothly. The AF is quick and silent. Weather sealing is not provided…

Pro

  1. Surprisingly sharp even at f/2
  2. Lightweight and compact
  3. Bang for your bucks

Con

  1. Focus shift
  2. Vignetting a bit high

How Trump’s Tariffs Could Impact the Camera Industry—Separating Fact from Clickbait

Before addressing the details, let me clearly state that I strongly oppose exploiting global disruptions to drive profits, especially within photography media. While we are a small business and genuinely appreciate it when our readers click affiliate links, using fear tactics to prompt premature camera purchases is unethical. Unfortunately, some larger competitors are currently employing such tactics—not just out of greed but due to a fundamental misunderstanding of global trade. I’ll try to summarize the situation concisely, but please bear with me if some points require additional depth or explanation.

As someone experienced with global business, politics, and trade law, I can confidently say that companies anticipated these tariffs well in advance. Camera manufacturers responded by shipping as much inventory to the U.S. as possible before the tariffs took effect. Whether or not we like to admit it, American consumers represent a huge market opportunity; therefore, the U.S. often receives supply-chain priority, partly explaining recent overseas shortages. Of course, not every company navigated this challenge equally well, and ongoing supply-chain disruptions only complicated the situation further. Thankfully, recent efforts by manufacturers to diversify their production locations will help mitigate long-term risks.

Given the current political climate—and particularly the unpredictability associated with President Trump—it remains possible that these tariffs could be short-lived. If tariffs persist, however, manufacturers have several strategies at their disposal to minimize consumer price increases. One common method is to intentionally delay or “slow-roll” the launch of new camera models. This approach allows companies to achieve lower manufacturing costs over time through increased scale and production efficiencies. In the short term, manufacturers may absorb some tariff-related expenses themselves to maintain consumer goodwill. Nevertheless, if tariffs remain long-term, any short-term price relief will likely be offset by higher pricing in future product generations.

Another potential strategy involves relocating production to countries with lower tariff rates or even to the United States, a move that would likely attract government incentives and political favor. Such major operational shifts require time and careful planning, further incentivizing manufacturers to slow the pace of new product releases. Companies understand that significantly increasing prices could stifle the growing enthusiasm for photography gear among consumers, so careful negotiation and strategic planning have already begun.

Ultimately, camera manufacturers prefer to stay out of political controversies and are motivated to maintain positive relationships with their customers. While slight price increases may occur as existing inventories are depleted, catastrophic price surges or severe product shortages are unlikely in the immediate term. The real impact of sustained tariffs—should they persist—would most likely be felt in subsequent product generations, when manufacturers’ ability to absorb tariff-related costs becomes significantly more limited.

If you’ve been persuaded into panic-buying and your purchase stretches your budget, it might be wise to reconsider and perhaps cancel your order. However, if you were already planning to purchase a camera soon, securing your current price could be beneficial. If you choose to proceed with your purchase, we would genuinely appreciate your support by using one of our affiliate links. We deeply value this community and always strive to maintain your trust. Thank you for reading.

Viltrox AF 50mm f/2 Announced

Viltrox AF 50mm f/2: B&H Photo / Amazon

Viltrox announced the Viltrox 50mm f/2 as part of its air series of lenses. Preorders started and you can find the MTF below.

Coupling a classic, versatile focal length with a lightweight design, the AF 50mm f/2 FE Lens from Viltrox for Sony E-mount full-frame digital cameras is a prime well-suited for everyday photography. Quick and quiet autofocus performance is provided via its STM focusing motor, making it reliable for both photo and video applications. Its f/2 maximum aperture allows working in dimly lit environments and helps to create flattering bokeh. Optical aberration and image distortion are reduced by the incorporated extra-low dispersion (ED), high-refractive (HR), and aspherical (ASPH) lens elements. Exif data transmission is supported as well as multiple camera shooting modes.

Optical Design
Thirteen lenses in nine groups, including three extra-low dispersion (ED) lenses, four high-refractive (HR) lenses, and one aspherical (ASPH) lens, to reduce flare and ghosting for improved contrast and quality

Nine-bladed diaphragm for more circular and pleasing bokeh

20″ minimum focusing distance, allowing you to focus on subjects fairly close to you

Internal focusing mechanism to optimize use with gimbals and other support systems
