PDR: Sony a9II vs Sony a9 vs Sony a9 ES

The Sony a9II and Sony a9 sensor are relatively similar with the a9II having a slight lead at base ISO, but it is unclear if these measurements were made with the electronic shutter or not because the Sony a9II results do not list with and without Electronic Shutter (ES). The Low light performance of the a9II and a9 ES are identical and closer in dynamic range than the non-ES a9 measurements, which are lower, but have better low light performance.

Sony a9II vs Sony a9 Buffer Testing

Tag The Shooter posted the first a9 vs a9II comparison I have seen showing off the new and improved Sony a9II buffer. His testing is a bit rough and he gets a bit lost with his words so the data below is the most valuable thing from the video since I wrote it while watching. Tag tries to remain scientific but forgets a few steps at times so the picture counts aren’t always accurate.

He also confuses card and camera names in the video towards the end which makes it a bit hard to follow. Below you can find the data and the cards.

a9: about 34.56 Seconds for 102 pictures
a9II: about 21.3 Seconds for 102 pictures

IEDM 2019: Sony 3-Layer Organic+Si Sensor

Image Sensor World spotted a new three-layer stacked organic image sensor from Sony at the 2019 international electron devices meeting.

A three-layer stacked color image sensor was formed using an organic film. The sensor decreases the false color problem as it does not require demosaicing. Furthermore, with the 2.0-μm pixel image sensor, improved spectral characteristics owing to green adsorption by the organic film above the red/blue photodiode, were successfully demonstrated.
