Sony a9II Technical Analysis: Star Eater Now Starts at 20 Seconds and Other Processing Decision Exposed

Jim Kasson’s blog the last word has always been a great goto spot for technical analysis of a camera and he is a few posts into his testing so I figured it’s time to start sharing his findings. The first major one is star eater is almost nonexistent on the new Sony a9II with it only starting to become a problem around 20 seconds so maybe some future cameras like the Sony a7IV will be the same.

Sony a9II “star-eating” – The Last Word

The read noise of the a9II drops suddenly on exposures of 20 seconds and longer, indicating that this is the shutter speed when the noise reduction digital signal processing kicks in.

Sony a9II fixed-pattern read noise — long exposures – The Last Word

The different noise from the right and left halves of the sensor is obvious in all but the blue channel.

Sony a9II fixed-pattern read noise — short exposures – The Last Word

There are both horizontal and vertical features. The horizontal features tend to have high spatial frequency in the vertical direction and the vertical features vary more slowly, except for the transition in the center of the green channels.

Sony a9II RN, FWC, and PDR – The Last Word

Note the high shadow SNR at ISO 800. The a9II changes to higher conversion gain at ISO 640, which makes the read noise drop, and that makes the shadows less noisy.

In a perfect world, all the FWCs would be the same. Here they come close to that. The FWC of the camera is about 88,000 electrons. I measured the a9 FWC at about 92,000 electrons. That’s virtually the same.

The jump downwards at ISO 800 is because of the increased conversion gain at ISO 640 and above. RN at high ISOs is approaching 1 electron, which is about the state of the consumer camera art these days. The low-ISO RNs for the a9 that I measured were a bit higher.

This sensor and the a9 sensor are peas in a pod.

Sony a9II ISO behavior – The Last Word

There is no sign of the black point shifts that we saw in the previous post.

Sony a9II dark-field spectra – The Last Word

Plane 1 is the red plane. Planes 2 and 3 are green, and plane 4 is blue. The horizontal axis is frequency divided by fs, which is the sampling frequency, so 0.5 on the horizontal axis is the Nyquist frequency for the sensor. You can see that the spectrum looks smooth and clean vertically, but has a jagged high-frequency rolloff in the other direction.

The first green plane look like the red plane, but the second green plane is clean in both directions.

The blue plane is the worst of them all.

Sony a9II precision – The Last Word

In general, I consider this good performance. I am please to see the absence of a lot of digital gain as the ISO settings climb to their upper reaches.

Sony a9II EDR – The Last Word

There is a glitch in one of the green channels at 5 seconds. Ignore that. The Sony “star-eater” digital signal processing doesn’t start until the shutter speed is 20 seconds or longer, which is quite an improvement over the a7RIV.

Meyer-Optic Görlitz is Back Again With 3 New Lens Designs

Meyer-Optic Görlitz is back again and they are prepared to launch three new lens designs that should be suitable for modern mirrorless cameras. Sadly their first relaunch attempt was not successful due to a variety of reasons so let’s hope this attempt is a more successful one.

“We are currently revising the entire portfolio and are expected to release the first optimized lens at the end of November. This is the Trioplan 100 f2.8 II. The other lenses such as Trioplan 50, Lydith 30 or Primoplan 75 will follow (presumably) in monthly intervals.”

Meyer Optik Görlitz version II lenses:

  • Meyer Optik Görlitz Trioplan 100 f/2.8 II: “With our Trioplan 100 f2.8 II we present you the classic of the Meyer Optik Görlitz family in a new, revised version. The optimized mechanics, the improved optical design and a newly designed lens coating enable the best Trioplan pictures of all times. In addition, the minimum focussing distance has been reduced to 0.9m. The Trioplan 100, worldwide known for its distinctive soapbubble bokeh, offers photographers the opportunity to rediscover the artistic soul of photography in times of point-and-shoot, instagram snapshots and pixel battles from major manufacturers. With our Trioplan 100 f2.8 II you create unique images and stand out from the crowd.”
  • Meyer Optik Görlitz Trioplan 50 f/2.9 II: “Our Trioplan 50 f2.9 II has been redesigned from scratch. A new mechanical design based on the Trioplan 100 f2.8 II now offers photographers an excellent handling of the 50mm focal length from the Trioplan family. By optimizing the optical design, it is now possible to focus on infinite sharpness even at aperture f2.9 and thus nothing stands in the way of versatile use. Of course, the Trioplan 50 f2.9 II also draws the famous soapbubble bokeh and at shorter distances a light swirl is created in the bokeh of the image. Like all current Meyer Optik Görlitz lenses, the Trioplan 50 f2.9 II was also designed for full format, but can of course also be used on APS-C cameras.
  • Meyer Optik Görlitz Lydith 30 f/3.5 II: “Like our Trioplan 50 f2.9 II, the new Lydith 30 f3.5 II has undergone a complete mechanical redesign. Haptics and handling could be improved and at the same time the compact construction could be maintained. The optical improvements support the brilliant sharpness over the entire image, as well as the faithful color reproduction of the photographed object. The imaging performance of the Lydith 30 f3.5 II achieved in this way leads to its special charm.

Coming for Canon EF, Fuji X, Leica L, Leica M, M42, MFT, Nikon F, Pentax K and Sony E mounts.

DPRTV: Sony a6100 Review

The replacement for the Sony a6000 is an incredible value and step up over one of Sony’s most popular cameras by far. The Sony 6100 has received almost universal praise and should be good enough for just about anyone to capture anything they would want. Below is a summary of the above video.

  • The Sony a6000 is the Camry of cameras
  • Sony a6100 isn’t super comfortable to hold, but the new grip is appreciated
  • EVF has been improved, but basically the same pixel count
  • Back LCD should be higher resolution, but the new touch screen is good to have for picking AF points even if it is limited
  • The a6100 is very fully featured, but it still uses Sony’s bad menu system
  • The built-in flash is useful and can be bent back to shoot upwards unlike the a6600
  • Sony-W battery is more efficient than ever and CIPA rated for 400+ shots
  • The new AF system has great human and animal face/eye detection
  • The new JPEG color engine is vastly improved over the a6000
  • 11fps top speed shooting, but it’s not real-time so you are always seeing the previous shot you took
  • Mid shooting speed is better for tracking things as they move around the scene
  • The 16-50mm is the kit lens and it is one of the worst on the market
  • If you’re going to print you should get a good cheap prime lens, but if you’re going to shoot for Instagram the kit lens is fine
  • If you want better glass go with the Fujifilm X-A7 or Canon EOS M50 since their kit lenses are better
  • New 24MP sensor is a substantial improvement over a6000 sensor.
  • Realtime tracking is the reason to go Sony
  • You can always shoot AF-C wide area if you’re not technical because it will pick the closest object or persons face first
  • They recommend shooting flexible spot focus medium-sized
  • Jordan likes to shoot auto ISO, but the only way to keep the shutter speed from going too low is to fix shutter and aperture in manual mode
  • When shooting kids Jordan forces his camera to be 1/250 or even 1/500
  • If you’re going to shoot video with the a6100 it is very capable and tracks well, but you should set your camera up for touch tracking.
  • The video image out of the a6100 is very punchy
  • Not a great handheld camera because of rolling shutter
  • The a6100 is basically the same as camera as the a6000, but real-time AF is a game-changer worth the extra money alone
