Activist Investor Daniel Loeb is Trying to Split Up Sony Again

Activist investor Daniel Loeb is calling for Sony to spin off their sensor business again. Last time he didn’t make a lot of progress, but this time he is using Sony’s lower stock price to gain a greater stake in the company to try to spin off the image sensor division again, while Sony buys back 4.8% of there stock worth about 200 billion yen ($1.83 billion) to boost shareholder returns. Sony previously announced they would buy back 100 billion yen for the first time in February 2020.

Optical Limits: Sony 28mm f/2 is a Disappointment

Optical limited tested the Sony FE 28mm f/2 and found it to be surprisingly lacking you can read the full review here or just the key points from the conclusion below. Sony has had a pretty good track record with its glass in recent years, but this lens missed the mark according to optical limits.

The Sony FE 28mm f/2 may be a prime lens but it’s quite obvious that Sony had (or wanted) to cut a couple of corners in order to save costs. The resolution characteristic isn’t overly harmonious to say the least. The lens may be sharp at medium aperture settings but has a substantial border/corner weakness at f/2 and f/2.8… If you operate the camera with activated image auto-correction, you won’t notice drastic weaknesses beyond this. However, both the original image distortions as well as vignetting are on the high side. Lateral CAs aren’t all that hot either for a contemporary lens. The quality of the bokeh is one of the better aspects…

The lens may not feel like much due to its low weight but objectively there isn’t anything to complain about the build quality. An all-metal body and a smooth focusing ring are good base ingredients and adding a constant length as well as the dust- and moisture-sealing makes it a very decent package. The AF is also reasonably fast and, typical for most Sony lenses, noiseless…

The reason for the existence of a prime lens should be that it offers something “more” over a zoom lens its focal length class. In the case of the Sony FE 28mm f/2, it’s about an extra stop or two of speed…

If this lens truly interested you I suggest you read the review closely before purchasing because it might have acceptable short coming for some at its rather low price point.

Tamron: No Interchangeable Lenses Delayed So Far

I have the full press release below, but here is the part that is more relevant to photographers:

With regard to its products destined for use by surveillance camera manufacturers in China, since development projects on the camera manufacturer’s side will be subject to delays, the development of some products on the Tamron side will also be delayed. However, at this present time, no delays are taking place with regard to the development of Tamron’s own-brand interchangeable lenses—part of its core photography-related business operations—or its development of new products in other areas or regions.
