Sony World Photography Awards Professional competition 2020: Finalists, Shortlist and Grant recipients announced
The World Photography Organisation is pleased to reveal the finalist and shortlisted photographers in the Professional competition for the Sony World Photography Awards 2020. Also included are details of new photographic projects by Sony Professional Grant 2019 recipients. Works by both Professional competition finalists and Grant recipients will go on display as part of the Sony World Photography Awards 2020 exhibition at Somerset House this April.

Now in its 13th year, the Awards’ Professional competition rewards a remarkable body of work for technical excellence and a fresh perspective on contemporary subjects. The winner of Photographer of the Year 2020 will be selected from the group of Professional finalists and announced during the Sony World Photography Awards 2020 ceremony in London on 16 April.

Over 345,000 images from 203 territories were submitted across the 2020 Awards’ four competitions and over 135,000 were entered across the Professional competition’s 10 categories – the highest number of entries to date. A new Environment category has been introduced this year in recognition of the growing importance of this topic in both fine art photography and photojournalism.

This year’s finalist projects engage with a wide array of topics, photography techniques and presentation methods, covering personal subjects and observations, inventive approaches to storytelling and shedding light on little known but critical issues.

Sony Expands Imaging Eco-system with Launch of New Camera Remote Software Development Kit
Empowers Developers and Integrators to produce new imaging experiences
Sony today released a new camera software development kit (Camera Remote SDK) that offers opportunities for developers and integrators to access Sony’s cameras and image data captured with them. The support for developers and integrators has been highly reinforced from the current Camera Remote API and allows developers and integrators to design bespoke applications to remotely control Sony cameras for tailored usage requirements. The applications provide remote control functions from a host PC and facilitate transmission of the image data back from the Sony cameras.

In addition, The Camera Remote SDK allows developers and integrators to remotely access other functions such as changing the camera settings, shutter release and live view monitoring in their software applications.

The Camera Remote SDK initially supports Alpha 7R IV and Alpha 9 II and the line-up of supported Cameras will be gradually expanded hereafter[i].

The Camera Remote SDK is available now and can be downloaded from here.

The current Camera Remote API’s provision will be closed following this new release of the new Camera Remote SDK and its support will be terminated[ii].

Sigma: Mr. Kazuto Yamaki Interview Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 Coming

  • What is your favorite Art lens
    • Yamaki has 3 the Sigma 35mm f/1.4, 18-35mm f/1.8, and Sigma 105mm f/1.4
  • Would Sigma release any anamorphic lenses
    • Aware of the demand, but comment at this time
  • Is the FP a one-off since it has a Bayer sensor
    • They picked bayer because they think it is the best for the concept of that camera
  • Will Sigam make a 70-200mm for Sony cameras?
    • Sigma will focus more on mirrorless lenses so that kind of lens will come
  • Will you release lenses for Fujifilm?
    • Aware of the demand and would like to support as many systems as possible, but their resources are limited so they need to prioritize based on demand
  • Will, there be lenses for Canon/Nikon/m43
    • Sigma is looking at Canon and Nikon full-frame right now and they are still studying them
    • They would like to support m43 moving forward, but there are already many lenses so it is hard to find a space for new products.

    • They are happy to work with those companies, but they also have many projects they are working on
