DPRTV: Sony ZV-1 Review – Being Beautiful With Jordan and The Ultimate Vlogging Camera

DPRTV posted its Sony ZV-1 Review today kicking it off with being beautiful with Jordan. The Sony ZV-1 certainly looks like an impressive camera for vloggers at a decent price point for now. Below is a summary of the above video:

  • Product showcase mode works well as demoed in the into with being beautiful with Jordan
  • Shot on Sony ZV-1 and Fujifilm X-T4
  • Chris shot with the ZV-1 and Jordon used the X-T4
  • It is lightweight and a clean simple body
  • The grip does a good job even though it is basic
  • Nice big buttons that are easy to find including the zoom being easy to change
  • Ports are out of the way from the screen
  • The fully articulating screen is very good
  • Can’t get to the SD card with the tripod socket in use
  • The dial for aperture and ISO isn’t great
  • The touch screen should be for more than AF and it s a huge miss-step
  • Hard to see the back screen in daylight
  • Should have a selector switch to change between video and stills
  • The on/off button is covered by the mic add-on
  • The built-in cameras are good, but they are all forward-facing
  • There is no headphone jack to monitor audio
  • For video, the ZV-1 is the clear winner over the RX100VA5
  • For stills, there isn’t a clear winner between the ZV-1 and RX100VA5 because the ZV-1 has true real-time AF
  • Face auto exposure works well, but you need to be in an auto mode for it to work
  • Does a good job going between sunlight and shadows
  • New standard profile was tweaked for skin tones and they think it was a good move
  • The camera has a mode for soft skin with low/medium/high
  • There is an auto aperture control that will make the background in focus or out of focus along with the vlogger
  • ZV-1has the 24-70mm f1.8
  • They could have used a wider lens especially since 4k makes it more like 26mm
  • The 1-inch sensor can get a pretty soft background
  • Chris wishes the Nikor 18-50 DL 1.8-2.8 lens was on the ZV-1
  • The ZV-1 isn’t weather sealed
  • The product AF mode works by seeing your face and it will focus on products you hold up in front of the camera without you having to put them in front of your face.
  • Product AF works very very nicely
  • Vlogger stick with optical stabilizer still a little bit of rocking motion
  • Vlogger stick with active steady shot which is optical stabilizer + digital stabilization looks very good but it crops and there is a little weirdness to the left and right of the frame
  • You can apply the digital crop later with Sony image edge software if you want
  • Compared the iPhone XR vs ZV-1 on a selfy stick and the stability is similar with less bounce on the phone and a little wider on the phone
  • With a Ronin SC the ZV-1 is going to get the best results
  • Jordon thinks the video quality is excellent and very sharp with well-controlled rolling shutter
  • Amazing slow motion
  • Can shoot continuously at 120fps
  • 480 and 960fps to not look good, but below that is very good
  • Love the 240fps mode
  • HLG is great if you want decent color and a little more dynamic range
  • The 8-bit codec can give you a lot of banding and waxy skin tones
  • You can reliably not worry about focus with this camera which makes it great for vloggers
  • The main competitors is going to be smartphones and their instant convenience
  • You cant work with a Sony ZV-1 as easily as a smartphone
  • If you’re looking for professional an ILC would be better
  • This camera is going to be best for people trying to sell products like “influencers”
  • This camera would also be great for streaming as a big step up over a webcam

Tamron Teases a Zoom Lens Coming Soon

It looks like Tamron has a new zoom lens coming for Sony E-mount. It doesn’t look like it will be longer than the 70-180mm. Maybe this will be a Sony 24-105mm f/4 competitor?

Sony a7SII ISS Footage and America’s Return to Space Flight

https://www.instagram.com/p/CApvt8WlxR9/

The space program has always been a point of pride as a Floridian and I do my best to attend every significant launch I can, like Falcon Heavy, but sadly there is no good way to video the launch in person thanks to COVID-19. So since I haven’t covered the Sony a7SII on the ISS and you might not be aware of the camera’s existence I figured I would share the videos from it and about it below, in addition, to reminding everyone to watch America’s return to space flight.

Hopefully, the weather holds and Space X is able to execute a flawless trip to the ISS today. If you’re interested in watching live Space X does a very good job covering their launches and I have also included the video below.
